Today, 7 March, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

07 March 1975: Two members from 2 Special Service Battalion were killed in a private motor vehicle accident while on weekend pass when their Volkswagen Variant with 6 persons on board, collided with a donkey at night near Vereeniging. The casualties in this accident were:

  • Corporal Johannes Andries Le Roux Lindeque. He was 21
  • Trooper Jurgens Edmond Muller. He was 19.

07 March 1978: 76927623SP Sergeant Antonio Fernando was accidentally killed at Buffalo when he was driven over by a Unimog in an apparent hit and run incident. He was 34.

07 Mar 1980: Three members from 13 Field Engineer Squadron were Killed in Action at the Chandelier near Elundu when a booby-trapped landmine coupled to other improvised explosive devices exploded while they were in the process of defusing it. 
The casualties were:

  • 74404443BT Sergeant Deon van der Vyver. He was 21.
  • 73261117BT Corporal Antonie Oberholzer. He was 22.
  • 74474008BT Sapper Willem Johannes Steenkamp Prinsloo. He was 22

07 Mar 1985: 80318199BG Corporal Deon van Niekerk from the Northern Transvaal Command Provost Unit was initially Reported Missing in Clubview, Pretoria while on official traffic control duty during a military exercise. A large truck filled with tons of builders gravel had jack-knifed on the Old Johannesburg Road and overturned in the area where he was last seen doing duty. His body was only discovered and recovered two days later from under the builders gravel while it was being removed. He was 20.

07 Mar 1991: 87387502BG 2/Lieutenant Steven van Rooyen from the Dog Training Centre accidentally drowned in the Blyde River at Belvedere. He was 19

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

    1976 – Pte Gift Muparamoto, Spt Coy, 3 Bde, died from gunshot wounds in an accidental shooting, West Riding Farm, Chipinga, Op Thrasher. He was 21 years old.

    1977 – D/Sgt Julias Nyoni Buranda, Special Branch, BSAP, died in Mpilo Hospital, Bulawayo, from wounds received in an ambush on 1 March in the Beitbridge area, Op Tangent. A three-vehicle BSAP convoy, proceeding from Beitbridge to Tshiturapadzi, was ambushed and Julias, driving a Land Rover, was shot in the stomach. Posthumous promoted to Detective Sergeant with effect from 17 November 1976. Died aged 32.

    1977 – Cpl Gary Caetano Crouch, 9th Bn RR, was killed by a landmine in the Rutenga area, Op Repulse. He played guitar, and sang, for the Salisbury based band, Telstars.

    1977 – FA Neill Alistair Cunningham, ADF, Intaf, was killed by CTs at Chibi, Op Repulse.

    1977 – Rfn Ventura Gonclaves Lopes, 5(Indep) Coy, RR died in a vehicle accident in Umtali, Op Thrasher. The 45 truck in which he was travelling had to brake suddenly to avoid a collision with a civilian car, resulting in Lopes being flung from the vehicle and killed. Died aged 19.

    1977 – DSA Japhter Makatore, Intaf, was killed in action near Mount Darwin, Op Hurricane.

    1978 – L/Sgt Lamcelot Chitima, Zulu Alpha Tp, Support Unit, BSAP, was killed in a contact, Makoni TTL, at the age of 23.

    1979 – Cst Cephas Changara, PATU, BSAP, died in a vehicle ambush on the Mateke Hills road, near Nuanetsi, Op Repulse, aged 21.

    1979 – ADC Andrew McGregor ‘Andy’ Sainsbury MSM, Regular Intaf, was killed in an ambush near the Mahuwe fly gate at the bottom of the Zambezi escarpment, in Sipolilo District, Op Hurricane.
