Today, 12 March, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

12 Mar 1962: P/21813 Major Anthony Dennis Michael Lawrenson AFC from Air Force Base Waterkloof was killed when his Dornier Do-27A, Serial No. 5431 crashed near Belfast while on a training flight. He was 43.

12 Mar 1975: 21 Dec 1953: 69342640R 2/Lieutenant Christopher Stuart Franklin from 7 Squadron was killed when his Harvard, Serial No. 7137 crashed near Oudtshoorn while carrying out general flying. It appears that the aircraft went into a spin from which the Pilot failed to recover. He was 21.

12 Mar 1984: Rifleman L. Dala from 31 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN Insurgents. He was 22.

12 Mar 1984: 81303083BG Private Frank John Lotriet from 1 Maintenance Unit died in 2 Military Hospital from knife wounds received during an assault by persons unknown. He was 19.

12 Mar 1986: 79012019PE Petty Officer (Miss) Heather Merle Crawley, a Navy Radar Operator based at Silvermine, was killed in a private motor cycle accident in De Waal Drive on the notorious Hospital Bend. She was 25.

12 Mar 1987: Rifleman J.W.L. Johannes from 5 Reconnaissance Regiment was Killed in Action during a contact with enemy forces. He was 24.

12 Mar 1987: 82747444SP Rifleman Faustino Sikote from 32 Battalion was Killed in Action during a contact with FAPLA forces near Evale in Southern Angola during Operation Kakebeen. He was 27.

12 Mar 1987: Special Constable Simon Venusiu from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 24.

12 Mar 1988: 84310929PE Rifleman Stephen Ebenezer Futcher from 32 Battalion was Reported Missing after he disappeared in the Okavango River one night while swimming behind the Pont near Buffalo Base. It is suspected that he was either taken by a crocodile or a hippo. Despite an intensive search, his body was never located and he remains unaccounted for. He was 20.

12 Mar 1989: 86107323HG Rifleman Thulani Maxwei Khuluse from 121 Battalion was killed in a shooting incident in the Community Hall at Verulam. He was 25.

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

     1979 – L/SO Guy Anthony Rees, Instructional Staff, BSAP, was killed in an accidental shooting during a night exercise, Op Hurricane, at the age of 21.
