Today, 17 March, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

17 March 1977: 70317078BT Sapper Christo Kemp from 14 Field Regiment was Killed in Action during mine clearing operations. The sweep team missed a landmine and it was detonated by the Spook just as Sapper Kemp moved forward to relieve the sweep team. His legs were blown off in the explosion and he died within minutes. He was 23.

17 Mar 1981: 73239311KT Rifleman Petrus Jacobus Viljoen from the Pietermaritzburg Commando was Killed in Action during a skirmish with FRELIMO troops near Ponta do Ouro. He was 23.

17 Mar 1987: Two members from 101 Battalion SWATF were Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN Insurgents in Southern Angola just north of the Cut-line. The Casualties were:

  • 82375908BG Rifleman Craig Douglas Wetton. He was 19. (7 SAI Attached 101 Battalion)
  • Rifleman M. Moses. He was 20. 

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

    1976 – FA J. Matekenya CHANDIWANA, ADF, Intaf, was murdered by CTs in Mount Darwin district, Op Hurricane.

    1977 – Rfn Henry Walter Alfred ARGENT , 1st Bn RR, was killed in a shooting accident, aged 26.

    1977 – Pte Keith O'NEILL, 3 Prtn Coy, RDR, was killed by a landmine.

    1978 – FR Nicholas RUZIWI, Police Reserve, died in a vehicle accident whilst carrying out escort duties along the Ft Victoria/Beitbridge road, at the age of 22.
