Today, 26 March, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

26 Mar 1957: Two members from Central Flying School Dunnottar were killed when their Harvard, Serial No. 7644 flew into rising ground near Trichardt during a night cross country flight. The aircraft disintegrated on impact and burnt out. The crew were:

  • Lieutenant Andre Dewald de Klerk. He was 25.
  • P/18121 2/Lieutenant Neil Rhodes Edward Kennaugh. He was 23. He survived the initial crash but was critically injured when thrown clear of the aircraft on impact. He succumbed to his injuries a short while later.

26 Mar 1965: 60065356 Rifleman Andrew Mark Newton-Thompson from 1 SAI collapsed from heat exhaustion while on a cross country run and died in the Groote Schuur Hospital. He was 21.

26 Mar 1965: 63239040 Rifleman Johannes Rudolf Fourie from 5 SAI died from a gunshot wound resulting from an accidental discharge of a fellow soldiers rifle during a training exercise at Ladysmith. He was 18.

26 Mar 1976: 69470425BT Rifleman Hermanus Stephanus Lombard Moss from the Kaffrarian Rifles was Killed in Action when his Unimog detonated a landmine just north of Ondangwa in Northern Owamboland. He was 23.

26 Mar 1977: 76902477SP Rifleman Joao Antonio from 32 Battalion was killed in a military vehicle accident at Buffalo while delivering supplies to the Base. He was 27.

26 Mar 1978: 69237519KT Corporal Nicolaas Johannes Koekemoer from the Johannesburg Regiment was Killed in Action during a contact with enemy forces in Rhodesia. The possibility exists that he may have been killed in cross fire between insurgents and Rhodesian and South African Security Forces during this action. He was 24.

26 Mar 1980: Rifleman John Stephen Botha from 32 Battalion died at Buffalo Base from a gunshot wound apparently accidentally self-inflicted. No foul play was suspected. He was 19.

26 Mar 1984: 76342104BG Lieutenant Hendrik Hans Jacob Maree from the South African Medical Corps attached to 202 Battalion SWATF was killed in a motor vehicle accident at Rundu. He was 23.

26 Mar 1998: 93737682PE Sergeant Danzil Rupert John Phillips from the SAAF Forward Air Command Post was killed in a military vehicle accident at Mbashee. He was 26. 

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

    1968 – Rct Tpr Reginald Alan ‘Reggie’ ‘Japie’ BINKS (17) and Rct Tpr Christopher Dillon WESSELS (18), both of Trg Tp, 1st Bn RLI, died from gunshot wounds sustained in the Maninga area, Urungwe District, during Op Cauldron. As part of a massive operation by the security forces to track down splinter groups of a large ZAPU/SAANC insurgency from Zambia, west of Kanyemba, a 21-strong patrol from 1RLI Training Troop, already in the area, was tasked with an assault on a suspected CT base. Following an initial firefight, and whilst conducting a sweep of the area, a lone CT , concealed in thick bush, opened fire, the two troopers. Reggie’s brother, L/Cpl Dudley Binks, was wounded in the fighting.

    1968 – Tpr Michael ‘Mike’ MULLIN (21), C Sqn, SAS, was killed in a shooting accident during Op Cauldron, Urungwe District.

    1971 – Sgt Henry Davidson ‘Harry’ YOUNG (24), New Sarum, RhAF, died in Salisbury Central Hospital of extensive burns received at New Sarum, when a fire broke out whilst practice bombs were being filled.

    1975 – Pte Mtanho Sebastian TIGERE (23), S Scouts, died in Karoi of multiple head injuries.

    1977 – Temp Cpl John William SMITH, 1 Tp, 1(Indep) Coy, RR, was killed in a contact, near Rutenga, Op Repulse. Three CTs were killed in the engagement, which involved three G-Cars, two K-Cars, a Lynx, and a Dakota.

    1977 – Tpr D.G. SMITH, S Scouts, died on active service.

    1977 – Rfn D.P. VAN WYK, 1st Bn, RLI, died on active service.

    1978 – Cst Wilson BANDA (20), I Tp, SU, BSAP, died from wounds sustained in a night contact in Mangwende TTL, Mrewa district, Op Hurricane.

    1979 – L/Cpl E. Ndoro DZASUKWA, 645274, Tp S Scouts, died on active service.

    1979 – Cst Gladstone KOMBORA (31), Uniform, BSAP, was killed in a CT action.
