Today, 29 March, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

29 Mar 1973: 70525456N Private Johan Marthinus Kruger from 2 Mobilisation Centre was killed in a military vehicle accident at Petrusburg. He was 18.

29 Mar 1977: 54167291PE Staff Sergeant Gert Jacobus Voges from 29 Field Workshops died from injuries sustained in a military vehicle accident at the Otavi-Tsumeb crossroads near Grootfontein while he was traveling as a passenger to the airport. He was 39.

29 Mar 1988: 80575046BT Gunner Hendrik Jacobus van der Westhuizen from Regiment Potchefstroom University was killed when he accidentally shot himself in Southern Angola during operations against FAPLA Forces near Cuito Cuanavale. His SAMIL 100 truck was on a re-supply mission when the vehicle hit a bump in the road and the jolt caused his assault rifle in the driver’s cabin to fall over. A shot went off, striking him in the chest, killing him instantly. He was 33. 

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

    1977 – PO John Bruce YATES, Uniform, BSAP, was killed in a vehicle ambush at Pande Mine (bauxite) in the Beitbridge District, Op Repulse, at the age of 19. He was travelling in a two-vehicle convoy when terrorists initiated the ambush from both sides of the road with RPD machine guns. John was on Ground Coverage duties at the time, and was lured into the ambush by false information from locals.

    1978 – DSA Tapera MASHIRE, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.

    1978 – FR Mtelekwe NKOMO, Police Reserve, BSAP, was killed in the same action as Ian Rosenfels.

    1978 – Tpr Ian ‘Ike’ ROSENFELS, S Scouts, was killed in a follow up after a farm attack.

    1978 – DSA Ernest VUSHANGWE, DSA, Kp Prtn, Intaf, was murdered by CTs.
