Today, 4 April, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

04 April 1978: Two members of SWA SPES accidentally drowned in the Olifants River near Doornkop. They were:

  • 76279363BG Rifleman Wayne Darrell Norman Meyers. He was 18.
  • 74324104BG Rifleman Marius van Zyl. He was 20.

04 April 1986: 82392879BG 2/Lieutenant Izak Johan Lourens from 911 Battalion SWATF died in the Opuwa Hospital after contracting Meningitis & Malaria. He was 19.

04 April 1986: 77880847SP Corporal Alfonso Alberto from 32 Battalion died from causes unknown. He was 27.

04 April 1987: 76909068SP Corporal Fernandez Andre from 32 Battalion was Killed in Action during a contact with enemy forces near Evale in Southern Angola during Operation Kakebeen. He was 26.

04 April 1989: 85212843PE Corporal Hermann Carstens from 1 Reconnaissance Regiment was Killed in Action during fierce fighting with a numerically superior force of heavily armed SWAPO/PLAN insurgents near Eenhana. He was 20.

04 April 1989: Three members from 101 Battalion Romeo Mike, SWATF were Killed in Action during fierce fighting in Northern Owamboland as 101 Battalion Romeo Mike and Koevoet elements continued to intercept and engage large groups of very heavily armed SWAPO/PLAN insurgents crossing into Owamboland from Southern Angola. The casualties in this contact were:

  • Rifleman E. Anunyela. He was 26.
  • Rifleman J. Mandume. He was 24.
  • Rifleman N. Kapentse. He was 23.

04 April 1989: 84588185PE Lieutenant Christiaan Phillipus Els from 1 Special Service Battalion Died in Hospital at Ruacana from Wounds sustained during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents near Ongandjera on 03 April 1989. He was 20. 

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

    1974 – Air Sub-Lt Walter Richard AIREY (23) and Air Sub-Lt Keith William GODDARD (23), both of No. 5 Sqn, RhAF, were killed in an air accident while flying a Canberra B2 (R2514), Musengedzi River near Macombe in Mozambique. It was carrying out a low-level bombing attack north of the border in the Macombe area. Armed with 96 x 20 lb fragmentation bombs, it was presumed that one of the 20lb frag bombs had hit another that was armed and that this resulted in a chain reaction.

    1977 – L/Cpl Richard Arnold HECKLER, 1(Indep) Coy, RR, was killed in a vehicle ambush, aged 24. 1977 – ADF Asst KAMBA, ADF, Intaf, was murdered by CTs in Zaka, Op Repulse.

    1978 – DA Tafirenyika BOKOSHA, Regular, Intaf, was murdered by terrorists.

    1978 – DSA Noah MATAMBANGWANA, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.

    1979 – L/Cpl Martin OVERBEEK, Spt Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, was killed in action on Rathcline Estate, near Tanda TTL, Makoni district.

    1979 – Tpr Anthony John WEBB, D Sqn, RhACR, was killed in a vehicle accident.

    1980 – FR Moses TSHUMA, PR, BSAP, died in a shooting accident, aged 22
