Today, 7 April, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

07 April 1984: 78368115BT Rifleman Daniel Stephanus Venter from 1 Parachute Battalion was Killed in Action in a landmine explosion during anti-insurgent follow-up operations just north of the Cut-line. He was 22.

07 April 1985: Special Sergeant Sakaria Naholo from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 32.

07 April 1985: 81199878BG Rifleman Willem Jacobus Du Randt from 3 SAI Oscar Company (Mortars) was Reported Missing on 07 April 1985 while swimming approximately 1km below the Epupa Falls. He dived into the water and it appears that he may have hit his head on submerged rocks. He surfaced for a short while before disappearing under the water again. Despite an intensive search of the area, his body was never found. He has no known grave and remains unaccounted for. He was 20.

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

    1977 – Assistant MAKANI, ADF, Intaf. Murdered by CTs at Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane.

    1979 – Rifleman G.J. MOSTERT, Recce Platoon, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Killed when burning huts exploded during an attack on a ZANLA camp at Chintopo, Tete Province, Mozambique.

    1979 – Auxiliary Constable Freddy SIKANGWA, Police Reserve, BSAP, KIA. Killed in a CT action, Op Repulse, at the age of 19. Freddy's private funeral was held in Chiredzi on 27 April.
