Today, 14 April, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

14 April 1983: 78530482BG Rifleman Barend Christoffel Dippenaar from the Infantry School was killed in a private vehicle accident on the Clocolan - Ladybrand road. He was 21.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1974 – Senior Aircraft Technician Patrick Rickman DURRETT, No. 4 Squadron, Rhodesian Air Force, KIA. Killed aged 19 in a Trojan aircraft R3244 when shot down by anti-aircraft fire north of Cabora Bassa in Mozambique.

1974 – Flight-Lieutentant (Pilot) Barry Christopher “Chris” WEINMANN, No. 4 Squadron, Rhodesian Air Force, KIA. Killed aged 28 in a Trojan aircraft R3244 when shot down by anti-aircraft fire north of Cabora Bassa in Mozambique.

1977 – Extension Assistant Daniel CHAZA, ADF, Intaf, murdered. Killed by CTs in Buhera, Op Thrasher.

1978 – Rifleman Andries Gideon VAN AARDE, 2nd Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on active service. Killed in an accidental contact with another army unit, aged 23 years. Buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo.

1979 – Private Hughes NGANDU, 4th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1979 – Guard Medicine ZVIDZAI, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service.
