Today, 16 April, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

16 April 1971: 01139013E Major Jan Wilhelm Arnhem Loubser from 1 Maintenance Unit was accidentally killed in a train accident at Kimberley. He was 42

16 April 1981: Two members from Infantry School were killed in a private vehicle accident on the National Highway near Richmond while on weekend pass. The casualties were:

  • 77220010BG Corporal Cornelius Johannes Potgieter. He was 19
  • 79274882BG Rifleman Jacobus Albertus Cilliers. He was 18.

16 April 1982: 79323408BG Rifleman Jan Daniels Gerhardus Du Toit from 1 SAI, attached to 61 Mech Battalion was Killed in Action during Ops Yahoo when he detonated a landmine during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents. He was 18.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1977 – Guard B. DUMEZWE, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, murdered. Murdered by CTs.

1977 – Guard R. MASINGAIDZE, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1977 – Rifleman Duncan Leslie McLaren, 2 (Independent) Company, Rhodesia Regiment, died on active service.

1978 – District Security Assistant Maphios MADZAMBI, Keep Protection, Intaf, died on active service.

1979 – Field Reservist Brian Trevor FURBER, Police Reserve, BSAP, KIA. Died aged 33 from wounds received in action in the Gwanda area, Op Tangent. His private funeral was held in the Gwanda Cemetery on 18 April.

1979 – Guard Ronnie JUTA, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service

1979 – Lance Corporal Jele Christopher Aaron MOYO, BCR (Post. – 25/05/79), Section 2IC, 3 Group, Selous Scouts, KIA. Died from wounds received in action, Op Petal, Botswana, Op Tangent. His BCR citation states that his patrol encountered a group of 6 CTs, capturing 4. Another was shot and killed. The remaining one tried to throw a grenade at the Scouts and, with no regard for his own safety, Jele tackled the CT and stabbed him to death with his bayonet.

1979 – Private Robert SIBANDA, C Company, 10th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment\RAR, KIA. Died from gunshot wounds in a CT action, at the age of 23. Buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo. His headstone carries a large RAR badge but, also carries the inscription 10RR.

1979 – Private G. WUTETE, 10th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Killed in a CT action.
