23 April 1979: 78916272SP Rifleman Alfredo Manuel Tchizondo from 32 Battalion was Killed in Action during a contact with enemy forces in Southern Angola. He was 26.
23 April 1982: 76900182SP Rifleman Noe Vasco from 32 Battalion was killed when he was accidentally run over by a military vehicle at Buffalo Base. He was 32.
23 April 1984: 82902693SWK Rifleman Johannes Kankara from 202 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 22.
23 April 1987: 87081790CK Rifleman Kobus Christopher Du Preez from the South African Cape Corps was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident on the Ben Rossouw Highway at Kuilsriver. He was 18.
23 April 1988: Three members of 102 Battalion SWATF were Killed in Action in Southern Angola, South West of Techipa when their Romeo Mike Teams were ambushed by a superior force of SWAPO/PLAN and FAPLA troops. The bodies of the three could not be recovered as the Teams were forced to withdraw when Cuban reinforcements arrived on the scene. The Romeo Mike Teams moved southwards, followed by the Cuban Force and were only able to evacuate the wounded team members at 01h00 the following morning. On 1 May 1988, another operation was launched into the initial contact area in an effort to recover the bodies of the three casualties and as expected, contact was again made with the enemy force. In the fierce fire fight that followed, 22 enemy troops including the Cuban commander were killed and a large quantity of weapons and equipment were captured before the enemy force withdrew. The three bodies were successfully recovered. The casualties were:
23 April 1988: 78392271BT Sapper Carl Sachse from 13 Field Engineer Regiment was killed when he accidentally detonated an anti-personnel mine while in the process of laying out a minefield. He was carrying a small quantity of mines on his person at the time of the incident and these mines also detonated in the initial explosion, killing him instantly. He was 26
1973 – Lance Corporal Mark Bryan COCKROFT, OPA, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Died aged 20 from multiple gunshot wounds in a vehicle ambush, Mazarabani, Centenary, Op Hurricane. Buried at Warren Hills, Salisbury. OPA were TF members living in rural areas too far out of town to attend parades with the RR battalions. They went to Llewellin for their NS and, thereafter, did not have the TF obligation, but were increasingly called up into the reserve battalions later in the war.
1973 – Corporal Bruce DAVISON, 4th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Died aged 23 from multiple gunshot wounds in a vehicle ambush, Mazarabani, Centenary, Op Hurricane. Buried in Inyazura where he was a farmer (Dagbreek Farm).
1973 – Rifleman John Turenne Vivian FORBES, OPA, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Died aged 21 from multiple gunshot wounds in a vehicle ambush, Mazarabani, Centenary, Op Hurricane. Buried in Sinoia Cemetery. OPA were TF members living in rural areas too far out of town to attend parades with the RR Battalions. They went to Llewellin for their NS and thereafter did not have the TF obligation but, were increasingly called up into the reserve battalions later in the war.
1973 – Private Fanny MATANGIRA, 10 Support Platoon, Rhodesian Army Service Corps, KIA. Died aged 22 from multiple gunshot wounds, Mazarabani TTI, Centenary, Op Hurricane.
1976 – Rifleman Gilbert BOTHA, 1 (Independent Company), Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Killed aged 19 by a gunshot wound in an ambush, Chiredzi area, Op Repulse. Buried in Shurugwi.
1979 – Constable Calvin Chikandiwa Jobe NDHLOVU, PATU, BSAP, KIA. Died from wounds received in a CT action, Op Hurricane, at the age of 23. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury, on 10 May.
