Today, 1 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

01 May 1982: Two members from Infantry School were killed in a private motor vehicle accident between Edenburg and Bloemfontein while on weekend pass. The casualties were:

  • 79231676BG Rifleman Marnes van Jaarsveld. He was 18.
  • 80230519BG Rifleman Jurgen Swaak. He was 18.

01 May 1982: 79482527BG Rifleman Hans Jurie Storm from 1 Parachute Battalion was killed in a private motor vehicle accident near Bloemfontein while on weekend pass. He was 19.

01 May 1984: 80225808BG Corporal Johannes Gerhardus Terblanche from 1 SAI was killed instantly when his Ratel Infantry Fighting Vehicle overturned during exercises at the De Brug Training Area. He was 20.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1975 – Section Officer Roger Vernon DAVIDSON, Uniform BSAP, died on active service. Roger was stationed at Salisbury Traffic at the time.

1976 – Private Sylvia Kathleen JAMES, 1st Field Regiment, RWS, died on active service. Died aged 17 from leukaemia in the Andrew Fleming Hospital, Salisbury. Sylvia worked in the QM stores for Rhodesian Army. Buried in Warren Hills, Salisbury.

1976 – Field Assistant Michael MANDIPAZA, ADF, Intaf, KIA. Died from a gunshot wound in a contact on Gairezi Ranch, Inyanga, Op Thrasher (VR906024). He was 21 years old and is buried in Inyanga. DA Sarutani was killed in the same action.

1976 – District Assistant Caspar Joseph SARUTAN, Regular Intaf, KIA. Died from a gunshot wound in a contact on Gairezi Ranch, Inyanga, Op Thrasher (VR906024). He was 26 years old and is buried in Inyanga. FA Mandipaza was killed in the same action.

1977 – Warrant Officer 2, Raynor Laurence "Ray" BENNETT, Attended School of Infantry, RLI, died on active service. Died of heart failure aged 35. He had taken part in a shooting contest at Thornhill Air Base the previous day and on the day of his death, had attended a braai with some friends. During the day he never complained of feeling ill, he was more concerned about his wife who was 6 months pregnant with their daughter. He and his wife went off to bed that night and Ray passed away just after 20:30

1977 – Recruit R. MAGOGO, Depot RAR, died on active service. Died of natural causes, Op Tangent.

1978 – Private P. DAVIDS, Army, died on active service. His service number would suggest he was NS.

1978 – Guard K. GANGA, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service.

1978 – Sapper Gerrit KEYTER, 2 Squadron Rhodesian Corps of Engineers, KIA. Died of wounds in a CT action.

1978 – Guard M. MADUVEKO, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service.

1978 – Guard Gilbert NANGOYI , Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service.

1978 – Guard M. NDEBELE , Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service.

1978 – Guard T. RUSERE, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service.

1978 – Private Lackson RUVERE, Regular Army, died on active service.

1979 – District Security Assistant Augustine MAKORE , Keep Protection, Intaf, died on active service.
