Today, 3 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

03 May 1969: 67866723E Lieutenant Andre Weilbach from 4 Squadron was killed when his AT-6 Harvard, Serial No. 7155 failed to recover from a spin and crashed near Hartebeespoortdam during a routine general flying training sortie. He was 25.

03 May 1976: Two members of the Kempton Park Commando were killed in a military vehicle accident in Pretoria. They were:

  • 71368484KT Lance Corporal Johannes Petrus Hendrik Barnard. He was 20.
  • 67451302KT Rifleman Lawrence William Custard. He was 24.

03 May 79: 66327941PE Captain Gabriel Johannes Jacobus Basson from 4 SAI accidentally drowned when his boat struck an underwater obstruction and he was thrown overboard by the impact. He was 28.

03 May 1987: 78508256BT Corporal Cornelius Johannes Du Toit from Regiment Bloemspruit died from a gunshot wound resulting from an accidental discharge of a fellow soldier’s rifle while at Fouriesburg. He was 24.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1977 – Constable Tichaona Christopher CHIKWAVIRA, 1 Troop, Support Unit, BSAP, killed on active service. Died in a vehicle accident, aged 25 years. He is buried in Buhera

1977 – Private Tinarwo MUTEMA, B Company, 2nd Battalion, RAR, killed on active service. Died in a vehicle accident.

1977 – Private David TAUYA, 2nd Battalion, RAR, killed on active service. Died in a vehicle accident.

1979 – Corporal G.E. CAREW, 10th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, died on active service. Died of cancer.
