Today, 5 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

05 May 1977: 71527865BT Rifleman Hendrik Johannes Jordaan from Regiment Westelike Provinsie was Killed in Action when he detonated a landmine while on patrol in the Jati Strip. He was 21.

05 May 1977: 72512734KT Willem Johannes Pietersen from the Boksburg Commando was part of a four-man squad on Observation Post duties on the Kavango River where their observation post was situated on a small piece of land that formed a peninsula. During the night the river rose, cutting the peninsula off from the river bank. The river was flowing very strongly at the time and during the squad’s attempt to get back to the river bank, Pietersen lost his footing and fell into the swollen river where he accidentally drowned. He was 20.

05 May 1980: Rifleman Simon Kapuna from (35 Battalion) 101 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Southern Angola. He was 24.

05 May 1980: Two members of 8 SAI were Killed in Action after suffering multiple shrapnel wounds when their TB came under attack from SWAPO/PLAN insurgents using mortars and RPG-7 Anti-Tank Rockets. The casualties were:

  • 74310210BG Rifleman Derek van den Berg. He was 21.
  • 75342055BG Rifleman Andre Johannes Redelinghuys. He was 20.

04 May 1987: 8406311430 Lance Corporal Rodney Abraham Scott from Group 39 was killed in a motor vehicle accident at Barkley East. He was 21.

05 May 1994: Corporal Michael John Kelly from Air Force Headquarters was killed in a private motor vehicle accident in Pretoria. (He was the personal driver for Major General Julius Kriel). He was 23.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1974 – Constable David BANGA, Uniform BSAP, KIA. Killed by gunfire from the north bank, presumably from Zambian soldiers, whilst on boat patrol on Launch P16 on the Zambezi River near Chirundu, Op Hurricane. Died aged 24. He was buried at his home in Featherstone on 8 May.

1975 – District Security Assistant Albert PAKAYI, Keep Protection, Intaf, KIA. Died aged 25 from gunshot wounds in a contact, Bveke Road, Mount Darwin, Op Hurricane (US680621).

1976 – Agricultural Demonstrator Wilson MAWIRE, ADF, Intaf, murdered. Killed by CTs at Mtoko, Op Hurricane. Also listed as Muchenje.

1976 – District Assistant M. MHANDO, Regular Intaf, KIA. Killed at Mount Darwin, Op Hurricane.

1976 – Private Masungwa Tobias MVIYO, 8 Platoon, C Company, 2nd Battalion, RAR, KIA. Died from a gunshot wound, Ruda, Honde Valley, Mutasa district, Op Thrasher, at the age of 24. He is buried in Zaka. Contact lists same service number and date, but gives his unit as 2 Rhodesia Regiment which, at that time, is unlikely.

1977 – Colonel Sergeant Dennis MILLER, 1st Battalion, RHU, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, KIA. Killed in an ambush about 10km from Crooks' Corner, Sengwe TTL, Chiredzi, Op Repulse, aged 26 years. Dennis was driving the lead vehicle in a convoy of three carrying Roads Department personnel on their way to work that morning. Thirty ZANLA terrorists ambushed the convoy with RPG7 rockets and AK47 rifles at 07:00 about 200m from the Grootvlei Airstrip. Dennis was killed instantly and two others were injured. Dennis is buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo. His headstone gives his date of death as 08 May 1977.

1978 – Guard G. MANGOYI, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1978 – Guard Elias MUNYANI, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, died on active service.

1978 – Guard Peter ZARURA, Protected Village Protection Group, Guard Force, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1979 – District Security Assistant Gibson HUMBASHA, Keep Protection, Intaf, died on active service.

1979 – District Security Assistant Toto OSTENI (not his surname), Keep Protection, Intaf, KIA. Died from wounds received in action. P Rundgren gives the date as 01 May.

1979 – Guard J. SHAIBU, RHQ Delta, Op Tangent, Guard Force, murdered. Murdered by CTs.
