Today, 10 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

10 May 1983 Four members from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) were Killed in Action during fierce engagement with a numerically superior force of SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. They were:

  • Sergeant A. Willem. He was 27
  • Special Constable U. Maundu. He was 25.
  • Special Constable T. Mbendura. He was 28
  • Special Constable J. Musaso. He was 24

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1971 – Technician\Sergeant Rodney Peter STRAW, Rhodesian Air Force, died on active service. Died from cardio-respiratory failure at Thornhill Air Base, Gwelo. He was 28 years old and was cremated at Warren Hills.

1974 – Wyson HOMBASHA, ADG, Intaf, murdered. Shot by terrorists in Kandeya TTL (US695705), Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane. He was 30 years old and is buried in Mt Darwin.

1976 – District Assistant Fourpence CHIVERE, Regular Intaf, KIA. Killed at Mudzi, Op Hurricane.

1976 – District Assistant Rodwell Toindepi MUCHADA, Regular Intaf, KIA. Died from a landmine blast 6 km east of Benson Mine on the road to Mtoko, Mudzi, Op Hurricane. He was 29 years old and is buried in Buhera.

1977 – Rifleman Eric Cecil HABAKKUK, 5 (Independent) Company, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Killed in a contact in the Honde Valley, Op Thrasher.

1978 – Private Lovemore MAPFUMO, D Company, 9th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, died on active service.

1979 – Private Rodney BOXTER, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, killed on active service. Killed in a vehicle accident, aged 19. Buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo.
