Today, 12 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.


12 May 1973: 67245654V 2/Lieutenant Jacobus Petrus Kolver from 6 Squadron was killed when his AT-6 Harvard, Serial No. 7126 spun into the ground near the Sundays River during a routine general flying training flight. He was 21.

12 May 1975: 70387378N Trooper Pieter Gabriel Eybers from 2 Special Service Battalion was accidentally killed when he fell out of a patrol observation post in the Operational Area. He was 20.

12 May 1980: 76451517BG Rifleman Cornelius Johannes Nortje from 1 SAI attached to 61 Mech Battalion was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned in Northern Owamboland. He was 19.

12 May 1982: 81564692PF Lance Corporal Michael Simon Ngoma from 5 Reconnaissance Regiment died from gunshot wounds accidentally sustained. He was 24.

12 May 1983: 74430166BT Rifleman Frank Paul Couvelis from 912 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action in Southern Angola when his convoy was ambushed by a numerically superior enemy force. The leading vehicle in which he was travelling was hit by RPG-7 Anti-Tank Rockets and as he was disembarking from the vehicle he received as fatal gunshot wound and died at the scene. At the time of his death, he was currently completing his 7th compulsory camp in the Operational Area.

12 May 1988: 79562583BT Rifleman Dean Anthony Lones from Regiment Dan Pienaar was killed in a military vehicle accident at Hazyview near White River. He was 25.

12 May 1994: 91749689PE Lance Corporal Emanuel Mogale Ramaila from 1 Reconnaissance Regiment was killed in shooting incident at Fort Scorpio, Madimbo Base. He was 26.


1976 – Rifleman Frederick Walter Henry BINT, 9th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Killed by a gunshot wound to the chest in a vehicle ambush in the Beitbridge area. His company was on its way home to Brady Barracks, travelling along the Tshiturapadzi to Chikwarakwara road when the ambush occurred, and as the troops debussed to defend their position, Rifleman Frederick Bint, Rifleman Pieter Blignaut and Corporal Theunis van Tonder were fatally wounded. Died aged 33. Cremated at West Park, Bulawayo.
Corporal Marthinus Kelly and Rifleman Niall Campbell, both sustained abdominal wounds in the ambush and died, in hospital, of their wounds on 15 May 1976 and 23 May 1976 respectively.

1976 – Rifleman Pieter Willem BLIGNAUT, 9th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Died aged 28 in the helicopter during a casevac, having received multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and head in a vehicle ambush in the Beitbridge area. Cremated in Bulawayo. See BINT above.

1976 – Corporal Theunis Johannes VAN TONDER, 9th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Died from a gunshot wound to the chest, in a vehicle ambush in the operational area, at the age of 33. Buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo. See BINT above.

1977 – Sergeant Abraham MUKUCHA, Uniform BSAP, murdered. Killed by terrorists, Zaka district, Op Repulse, aged 35 years. Abraham was returning to the Zaka police station after visiting a local hospital in the course of his duties. He and a constable stopped at a store to buy some goods and whilst doing so were identified by four terrorists in the store. The constable managed to escape but, Abraham was shot dead by the terrorists. His semi-military funeral was held in Marandellas on 18 May.

1977 – Patrol Officer Edward Phillip "Pip" NICHOLAS, Uniform BSAP, KIA. Killed 10 kilometres from Chipinga when acting as front-gunner for a convoy, Op Thrasher, at the age of 19. The Birchenough Bridge-Chipinga convoy was attacked by terrorists, causing Edward to return fire, but he was shot and killed in the ensuing engagement. His memorial service was held in Salisbury on 18 May.

1978 – Guard C. JOJO, RHQ Alpha, Guard Force, Op Hurricane, died on active service.

1978 – Constable John KATIYO, Uniform BSAP, died on active service. Died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in his quarters in Concession, aged 23 years. Buried in Mtoko district on 17 May.

1978 – Private Jenamiso KHUPE, 5 (Independent) Company, RAR, KIA. Killed in a contact, at the age of 24. Buried in Lady Stanley Cemetery, Bulawayo.

1979 – Junior Corporal T. FRED (not his surname), RHQ Delta, Op Tangent, Guard Force, died on active service.

1979 – Captain Michael Kenneth "Mike" HARDY, 3 Troop, Selous Scouts, murdered. Killed in Bulawayo when deliberately shot, through the window of the control tower, at Brady Barracks.

1979 – Guard P. MKEWBU, RHQ Alpha, Op Hurricane, Guard Force, died on active service.

1979 – Trooper Douglas Sydney "Dougie" MUIR, 1 Commando, 1st Battalion, RLI, KIA. Killed in a contact in the Enterprise area, Op Salops.
