Today, 13 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

13 May 1964: P/49773 Rifleman Paul Jacobus Krogh from 1 Parachute Battalion was accidentally shot dead by a fellow soldier in the Barracks in Tempe, Bloemfontein. He was 20.

13 May 1981: 81502684PP Rifleman Mike Williams from the South African Intelligence Corps was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident, at Madimbo. He was 21

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1969 – Tpr Alan Johnston (aged 21), 2 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, KOAS when struck by the blades of a helicopter, near Kanyemba, Sipolilo district. Elements of 2 Cdo were in the area on border control operations. As Alan was deplaning from a South African helicopter, he got caught between a steep incline and the blades. Tpr Poole who had deplaned just before Alan was slightly injured at the same time. This was Alan's first bush trip back with the commando after a period of absence in the UK.

1976 – Pte Dzingirayi Mukoni (aged 21), 3 Pltn, A Coy, 1st Bn RAR, KIA from a gunshot wound, in a contact, in Mtoko, Op Hurricane.

1978 – Cst Charles Madhiri (aged 25), GC BSAP, KIA. Died from wounds received in a contact two days earlier in the Op Thrasher area.

1978 – CA Edward Mkandhla, ADF Intaf, Murdered by CTs.

1978 – Pte Phineas Rutunga, 5(Indp) Coy RAR, DOAS.

1979 – Gd Moses Chikandiwa, 3 Group, PV Prtn, Chiredzi GF, DOAS.
