Today, 14 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

14 May 1976: 72348022BC 2/Lieutenant Lionel John Kidson from 6 SAI was critically injured when his Unimog vehicle overturned on the “Wit Pad”, close to Eenhana. The 6 SAI convoy was being deployed to Nkongo when the accident occurred. He and the other injured were airlifted to the Grootfontein Hospital where he died during the night. He was 19.

14 May 1980: Three members from 8 SAI were killed after receiving multiple shrapnel wounds in an accidental M26 hand grenade explosion at Okalongo in Northern Owamboland. They were:

  • 75560755BG Lance Corporal Andre David Naude. He was 21.
  • 77452993BG Rifleman Frederick Engelbrecht. He was 18.
  • 78447562BG Rifleman Willem Johannes Landman. He was 20

14 May 1982: 80670649KC Rifleman Andre Jodt from the South West Africa Territory Force Gymnasium was killed in a military vehicle accident. He was 29.

14 May 1986: 70557797KV Staff Sergeant Jan Carl Bergh from the Soutpansberg Commando was killed in a private vehicle accident while on his way to the Unit Headquarters after being called up for duty during the state of emergency. He was 42.

14 May 1987: Rifleman L. Emmanuel from 201 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 24.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1977 – Lance Corporal Raymond Edwin MAGUIRE, 1 Commando, 1st Battalion, RLI, died on active service. Fell from a tree in the middle of the TF pub at Rutenga on the promise of a parachute prank. Raymond hit his head on the brickwork below and died of a fractured skull.

1977 – Woman Constable Effah NCUBE, Uniform, BSAP, killed on active service. Died from injuries received in a vehicle accident on 12 March 1977, aged 25 years. Effah was buried in Salisbury on 19 May.

1977 – Sergeant V.V. STUHARDT, Protection Company, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, died on active service. Buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo.

1979 – Private Silindile GWENEZI, 1st Battalion, RAR, killed on active service. Killed in an accidental shooting.

1979 – Private Peter GWIRIZE, 2 MU, Rhodesian Army Service Corps, KIA. He was 22 years old and is buried at the Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury.

1979 – Constable Clever MAKWANYA, Support Unit, BSAP, KIA . Died from wounds in a CT action, at the age of 23. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury, on 18 May.

1979 – Constable Willard Stariko, CPU, BSAP, died on active service. Died of natural causes in Salisbury Hospital, aged 25 years. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury, on 16 May.

1979 – Trooper David SIBANDA, D Squadron, Rhodesian Armoured Car Regiment, died on active service.
