Today, 22 May, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

22 May 1969: 65411548N Trooper Hendrik Erlank Pieterse from 84 Technical Stores Depot was killed in a military vehicle accident. He was 19.

22 May 1983: 76397272BG Rifleman Johannes Engelbrecht from the Infantry School was critically injured in a private motor vehicle accident near Colesburg and later succumbed to his injuries in the Universitas Hospital, Bloemfontein. He was 22.

22 May 1985: 68558154PM Major Jan Pen Wessels from 85 Combat Flying School was killed when his Dassault Mirage IIID2Z, Serial No.848 crashed near Pietersburg. The Mirage entered an initial full spin with the necessary recovery of stick into spin. The Rate of Descent was extremely high and because they were unable to recover, the Student undergoing instruction, Captain Louis Du Plessis, was ordered to eject. Major Wessels stayed with the aircraft and actually recovered from the spin but the aircraft immediately entered a steep spiral turn. The rate of descent by this time was far too high and prevented Major Wessels from ejecting and he went in with the aircraft. He was 36.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Constable Azariah CHIMUSARU, Uniform BSAP, died on active service. Died of meningitis in the Howard Institute Hospital, Chiweshe TTL. Based at BSAP Zaka. He was 46 years old.

1976 – Rifleman David Conway STIDSTON-BROADBENT, 10th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Died from gunshot wounds in a contact in Mtoko area, Op Hurricane. His night ambush position had been caught in return fire. One other SF was wounded and one CT was wounded in this contact and died when he was caught the following morning. Died aged 35 years, he is buried in the Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury.

1977 – Field Reservist Colin CHAPMAN, Police Reserve, BSAP, killed on active service. Killed in an accidental shooting whilst on a training patrol in Melsetter at the age of 47 years. Colin's funeral service took place in Melsetter on 26 May.

1979 – Sergeant Davison Martin CHITAURO, Uniform BSAP, killed on active service. Died in a vehicle accident, aged 34 years. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury, on 31 May.
