Today, 1 July, we salute and honor the following men who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

01 Jul 1968: Two members from Central Flying School Dunnottar were killed when their AT-6 Harvard, Serial No. 7386 crashed shortly after take-off after striking High Tension Cables near Dunnottar. They were:

01238625PE Captain Ernest Lodewicus Groenewald. He was 27
65636458PE 2/Lieutenant Anton Fick Bosch. He was 21

01 Jul 1982: 78214962BG 2/Lieutenant Campbell Uys from 32 Battalion was Killed in Action during a contact with enemy forces in South Eastern Angola. He was 19.

01 Jul 1983: 79437612BG Sapper Andries Petrus Burger from 1 Construction Regiment was killed when he was accidentally run over by a construction vehicle. He was 19.

01 Jul 1983: Two members from 32 Battalion were Killed in Action during a contact with enemy forces during Ops Dolfyn in Southern Angola. They were:

78226370PE Sergeant Gerrit Hendrik Du Rand. He was 21
83706069SP Rifleman Edwin Kasera. He was 23

01 Jul 1983: 80272099BG Corporal Andries Petrus Malan from 701 Battalion SWATF was killed when his Buffel Troop carrier overturned in the Operational Area. He was 19.

01 Jul 1983: 76554898BT Rifleman Johannes Albertus Wessels from Regiment Christiaan Beyers died from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained at Vhembe Base. He was 18

01 Jul 1986: 83411314BG Rifleman Gavin Bazil Glinski from 7 SAI was killed when the Buffel Troop Carrier in which he was a passenger, overturned at Ackornhoek. He was 18

01 Jul 1989: 86245354BG 2/Lieutenant Nikolaos Sataras from Group 13 was Killed in a private motor vehicle accident at Gravelotte near Tzaneen while on official duty. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR 

01-Jul-70 Flt Lt - Plt Michael Hill No 7 Sqn RhAF KOAS Killed in an air accident whilst flying an Alouette IIIB R5117 near New Sarum. Died aged 29.

01-Jul-70 Sqn Ldr - Plt Gordon Nettleton No 7 Sqn RhAF KOAS Killed in an air accident whilst flying an Alouette IIIB R5117 outside the main gate to New Sarum. As the helicopter came in to land, it inexplicably rolled onto its back He was the first fatality of this helicopter squadron. Died at the age of 40. Flt Lt Michael Hill was killed in the same accident.

01-Jul-71 Rct Michael Oosthuizen 1st Bn RLI KOAS Died from injuries sustained in an accident in the Bindura area, at the age of 17

01-Jul-71 Gnr Robert Burrow Depot RhA DOAS Died in Salisbury Central Hospital of a fat embolism. Rob was driving home from Depot in uniform, having been on weekend guard duty, when he was involved in a vehicle accident. He was 22 years old .

01-Jul-77 DA Mika Ncube Regular Intaf Mrd Killed by CTs whilst on R&R, Mahlatini Line, Tjolotjo (Nyamandhlovu), Op Tangent

01-Jul-78 Gd J. Firi - (Phiri?) PV Prtn Group GF DOAS

01-Jul-78 Pte J. Sibanda Reg Army DOAS

01-Jul-78 Gd Gift (Guest?) Gwatidzo PV Prtn Group GF DOAS

01-Jul-78 Gd S. Muchona PV Prtn Group GF DOAS

01-Jul-79 Sgt Humphries Mapfumo Army DOAS

01-Jul-79 Spr Stanford Samson - not his surname Sqn RhE KIA Died from wounds in a CT action.
