Today, 12 July, we salute and honor the following men who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

12 Jul 1973: 70479589BC Rifleman Abraham Frederik Greeff from 3 SAI was killed in a military vehicle accident at Rundu. He was 18.

12 Jul 1979: 77646552HO Lance Corporal J.L. Samutiki from 33 Battalion SWATF was killed when his Buffel Troop carrier overturned in the Operational Area. He was 27.

12 Jul 1980: 80861370HV Rifleman T. Josef from 35 Battalion SWATF died from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained in the Operational Area. He was 24

12 Jul 1982: 81955924HX Rifleman Katopora Tjiharukua from 102 Battalion SWATF was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned near Opuwa. He was 25.

12 Jul 1983: 76468552PE Lieutenant Bruce Charles Chinery from 40 Squadron was killed when his Atlas MB326M Impala Mk I, Serial No. 477 suffered engine failure shortly after take-off from Air Force Base Waterkloof. The aircraft crashed with a high velocity and impact angle near Monument Park Extension. On impact, the ejection seat activated and ejected the pilot horizontally along the ground into the base of a tree trunk, killing him instantly. He was 22.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR 

12-Jul-76 Pte Charles Mahogo 2nd Bn RAR DOAS He was 19 years old.

12-Jul-78 Pte Peter Ndlovu B Coy, 4th Bn RR KIA

12-Jul-79 D Cst Samuel Khumalo CID/SB BSAP DOAS Died in Mpilo Hospital, Bulawayo, aged 27 years.

12-Jul-79 DSA Kenneth Musina Kp Prtn Intaf DOAS

It is indeed right and honourable to remember our fallen colleagues.
Re Lt Bruce Chinery:
- I witnessed the accident from the AFB Waterkloof control tower
- The incident occurred on 11 July 1983
- It was consequent to a practice simulated engine failure on take-off; he briefed ATC prior to take-off.
- I believe he had ample time and opportunity to eject but steered his aircraft away from the suburb not to harm others.
