Today, 16 July, we salute and honor the following men who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

16 Jul 1977: 69410728KT Rifleman Christiaan Michael Albert Tesnar from the Lydenburg Commando was Killed in Action during a contact with PLAN insurgents near Ruacana. He was 24.

16 Jul 1981: 78976149SWH Rifleman G. Ruhuzo from 102 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with PLAN insurgents. He was 26

16 Jul 1984: 81257230BG Private Gabriel Johannes Jacobus Frederik Crouse from 72 Motorised Brigade was killed in a military vehicle accident in Alberton. He was 19.

16 Jul 1984: 83961754CK Rifleman Daniel Adonis Douwrie from the South African Cape Corps was Killed in Action in a landmine explosion in Northern Owamboland. He was 25.

16 Jul 1986: 05547849PE Flight Sergeant (Flight Engineer) Edward Michael Bloem from 31 Squadron was Killed in Action when his Alouette III Helicopter, Serial No. 43, collided with a radio mast stay-wire at Okankolo (17 57 24 S 016 25 32 E) in Northern Owamboland during late afternoon counter-insurgency operations in the area. The helicopter was operating out of Air Force Base Ondangwa. He was 39.

16 Jul 1993: 81192106HW Staff Sergeant Richard Ebanhaezer Gericke from 31 Battalion SWATF was killed in a motor vehicle accident between Schmidtsdrift and Kimberley. He was 27.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

16-Jul-79 Tpr Stephen "Steve" Dwyer 11 Tp, 3 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI KIA Died from wounds received in action west of Buffalo Range, Op Repulse, aged 27 years. Elements of 3 Cdo Fire Force from the FAF at Buffalo Range had been deployed by helicopter and Dakota into an area of thick undergrowth flanked by hills. Sgt Hugh McCall's stick, dropped in by helicopter, quickly engaged the enemy, but a young, lone CT managed to inflict fatal head gunshot wounds on both Sgt Hugh McCall and Tpr Steve Dwyer, before he was himself killed later. Steve had been the stick's second radio carrier, and at the time of his death was trying to come to the assistance of the wounded Hugh McCall. Steve was a US national from Boston, Massachusetts who had served a tour with the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea.

16-Jul-75 Cst Nicholas Majoni Uniform BSAP KOAS Died from severe head injuries in Darwendale. He was 23 years ol

16-Jul-79 Act Sgt Hugh McCall 11 Tp, 3 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI KIA Died from wounds received in action west of Buffalo Range, Op Repulse, aged 44 years. Elements of 3 Cdo Fire Force from the FAF at Buffalo Range had been deployed by helicopter and Dakota into an area of thick undergrowth flanked by hills. Sgt Hugh McCall's stick, dropped in by helicopter, quickly engaged the enemy, but a young, lone CT managed to inflict fatal head gunshot wounds on both Sgt Hugh McCall and Tpr Steve Dwyer, before he was himself killed later. Steve Dwyer, was killed trying to save Hugh when he was killed. Hugh, a Vietnam veteran having served with the US Army 173rd Airborne, was on the last day of a six-week stint, before planning to leave with his Rhodesian wife and new baby to New York. A book on the Rhodesian Bush War, "Fire force", authored by Chris Cocks, is dedicated to his memory.

16-Jul-72 Cst Paradza Uniform BSAP Mrd Stoned to death whilst guarding a dip tank in the Ndanga Tribal Trust Lands south east of Ft Victoria, Op Repulse.

16-Jul-78 Pte Munyaradzi Pasina Depot RR DOAS

16-Jul-74 FR Jerzy Stec PR BSAP DOAS Died from a heart attack, Mukumbura, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane. A Polish national. He died aged 44.
