Today, 18 July, we salute and honor the following men who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 


18 Jul 1963: P/5103 Candidate Officer Matthys Marthinus Hattingh from Air Operations School at Langebaanweg was killed when his AT-6 Harvard, Serial No. 7332 crashed into a mountainside near Porterville in bad weather. He was 19.

18 Jul 1968: 44433 Constable Daniel Du Toit from the South African Police was Killed in Action during a contact with ZIPRA insurgents in a well defended position in the Rawamombe Range near Kariba, Rhodesia during Operation Griffin, a Joint operation in involving the RLI, RAR, SAP and Rhodesian Air Force. He was part of the forward sweep and was engaged by the insurgents at very close range. One SAP officer and two other SAP Constables were wounded during this contact. He was 24.

18 Jul 1973: 71329221N Rifleman Keith Hahn from 1 SAI was killed when the Bedford vehicle in which he was travelling as a passenger, overturned at Kandelaars River Station. He was 18.

18 Jul 1980: 76504810BG Lance Corporal Nicolaas Jacobus van der Merwe from 1 Special Service Battalion was Killed in Action while on patrol 10km from Ondangwa. Their Armoured troop surprised a SWAPO/PLAN insurgent patrol in a Shona and immediately opened fire. He was killed by enemy rifle fire while directing fire from the turret of his armoured car. Nine members from the SWAPO/PLAN patrol were killed in this contact and two were captured. He was 19.

18 Jul 1981: 78425915BG Rifleman James Findlay-Marshall from the Infantry School was killed in a private motor vehicle accident on the National road between De Rust and Uniondale while on weekend pass. He was 18.

18 Jul 1982: 76909662SP Rifleman Frisiano Dala from 201 Battalion SWATF died in 1 Military Hospital from injuries received in a Military Vehicle Accident at Rundu on 06 July 1982. He was 24.

18 July 1983: 76426352BG Rifleman Jan Harm Kruger from 1 Parachute Battalion died after suffering severe brain injuries in a non-military related accident. He was 23.

18 Jul 1985: 80586217BW Rifleman George Mike Thompson from the Army Catering Corps was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned at Oshakati. He was 22.


18-Jul-76 Sgt - Tech/Gnr John "Pat" Graham No 7 Sqn RhAF KIA Died from a gunshot wound, as a result of ground fire whilst flying in an Alouette IIIB R5076 in the Inyanga area, Op Thrasher. Died aged 25

18-Jul-76 Rfn Stephen Nugent 3 (Indp) Coy RR KIA Died from a gunshot wound, in a contact at the base of Mtarazi Falls, in the Manicaland Operational area, Op Thrasher, at the age of 18.

18-Jul-77 Cst Sibabi Mhlanga Uniform BSAP KIA Died in a vehicle ambush in the Tuli area, Op Tangent, at the age of 28.

18-Jul-78 WO2 David Boshoff Army DOAS of natural causes.

18-Jul-78 DSA Ekemu Moyo Kp Prtn Intaf DOAS

18-Jul-79 Cst Simon Marenga SU BSAP KIA Died from wounds received in action, at the age of 22.

18-Jul-79 Cpl Trevor John Speight B Coy, 1st Bn RR DOAS
