Today, 21 July, we salute and honor the following men who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

21 Jul 1975: 73245037N Lance Corporal Douglas Brian Snell from 11 Commando Regiment died from a gunshot wound resulting from the accidental discharge of a fellow soldier’s rifle while he was serving in Northern Owamboland. He was 18.

21 Jul 1984: 83069864CK Private Johannes Ricardo Matthee from 16 Maintenance Unit died from a gunshot wound resulting from the accidental discharge of a fellow soldier’s rifle while he was serving at Grootfontein. He was 21.

21 Jul 1985: 806422317BW Rifleman Christiaan Jack from the Army Catering Corps was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident at Oshikuku. He was 26

21 Jul 1986: 80253271BG Corporal Mark Twain Whiteley from 701 Battalion SWATF died from a gunshot wound resulting from the accidental discharge of a fellow soldiers rifle. He was 24.

21 Jul 1987: 81137879BG Rifleman G Immelman from the Army Battle School was accidentally killed while stationed at the Army Battle School when he was crushed between a loader and a tipper. He was 22.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR 

21-Jul-72 Sgt Raymond Brotherton 2(Indp) Coy RR KOAS Died in Salisbury Central Hospital of major head injuries sustained in a road accident. He was based at Kariba. He was 26 years old

21-Jul-77 Rfn Neil Wilkinson E Coy, 10th Bn RR DOAS

21-Jul-78 Sgt David "Dave" Cordell No sub-units RIC KIA Killed in a grenade accident. He was involved in an ambush whilst driving a Land Rover in the Mtoko TTL. Harmon Cusack writes, "Dave and I, at the time, were in the same unit, RIC, and he took over from me at our Mtoko base. At the time I informed him that there were 12 terrorists operating in the area. Intelligence at that time confirmed that our C/S was their next target. The ambush took place along a dirt road about 15 km from our base camp. David was driving the first vehicle and took the brunt of the initial fire fight. The rest of the C/S of 6 personnel returned fire and went into an immediate follow up. A contact ensued later that day with the same group and two terrorists were killed along with Dave when a faulty grenade, fired from a G3, exploded."

21-Jul-79 Spr Clive "Clivo" Jennings 4 Sqn RhE KIA Died of wounds whilst trying to lift a landmine.

21-Jul-79 Spr Elliot Moyo 7 Sqn RhE KIA Died of wounds in a CT action.

21-Jul-79 Cst Mackson Ngwenya Uniform BSAP KIA in a CT action in the Victoria Falls area, Op Tangent, at the age of 25.

21-Jul-79 Tracker FR Sambulo Ngwenya PR BSAP KIA in a CT action in the Victoria Falls area, Op Tangent.

21-Jul-79 Spr Raphael Nyoni 7 Sqn RhE KIA Died of wounds in a CT action.

21-Jul-79 Spr Mandla Boy Sibanda 7 Sqn RhE KIA Died from wounds in a CT action.

Douglas Brian Snell was my younger brother. I am so surprised that his name is mentioned. A sad passing, but accidents happen. Still miss and love him dearly.
