Today, 26 August, we salute and honor the following men who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

26 Aug 1976: Two members of Bravo Group were killed when their Unimog overturned near Rundu. They were:

  • 73511776KT Rifleman Harry Albert Bekker from Boksburg Commando. He was 19.
  • 72203805BA Rifleman Andries Jacobus Pretorius from 3 SAI. He was 19.

26 Aug 1978: 76694017PC Lance Corporal Francois Louw from the South African Cape Corps was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident at Ruacana. He was 21.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR 

26-Aug-75 Cpl Bryan Taylor 2 Sqn RhE KOAS Died in a vehicle accident at the 260km peg on the Karoi to Chirundu Road, Op Hurricane, at the age of 36.

26-Aug-79 Sgt Benjamin (Ben) le Roux 3 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI KOAS Died in a vehicle accident, aged 27. A no-nonsense Afrikaner, with a sense of humour, who had served with the Commando for several years. He became custodian of the Commando mascot, Zulu, a Golden Labrador Retriever, that was a gift from the American RLI officer, Lt John Cronin.
