Today, 29 August, we salute and honor the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 


29 Aug 1973: S158792N Constable M.C. Manci from the South African Police was Killed in Action during a contact with insurgents when his patrol was ambushed at Mount Darwin, Rhodesia. He was 22.

29 Aug 1974: 70264544R Lance Corporal Stephanus Marais from 1 Reconnaissance Regiment drowned in a diving accident in Mossel Bay Harbour during a Training Exercise. His body recovered the following day. He was 19.

29 Aug 1985: 74377680PE Sergeant Petrus Cornelius Frederick Du Plessis Cohen from the Soutpansberg Military Area Provost Unit was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident at Messina. He was 27.

29 Aug 1985: 81222473BG Lance Corporal Marcell Stephen Lombard from 2 Field Engineer Regiment was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned in Northern Owamboland. He was 29.

29 Aug 1986: 83263863BG Sapper Willem Jacobus Coad from 1 Construction Regiment was killed when the water tanker vehicle he was driving, overturned at Komatipoort. He was 18.

29 Aug 1987: 81032195BG Corporal Kirk Hendriksen from 5 SAI was killed when he accidentally fell off a moving train while trying to prevent a prisoner in his custody from escaping. He was 22.

29 Aug 1987: 87064085CK Rifleman Cornelis Dilman from 1 Special Service Battalion died from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained during a shooting incident in Northern Owamboland. He was 26.


29-Aug-77 Pte Morgan Ndhlovu B Coy, 1st Bn RAR KIA in a contact near Matetsi, Wankie district, Op Tangent. At midday, elements of B Company encountered a gang of 20-30 ZIPRA CTs and, in the ensuing contact, Morgan was fatally wounded. The CTs bomb-shelled and escaped.

29-Aug-79 DSO David James CID BSAP KIA Died from wounds received in an ambush in the Chibi TTL, Chibi district, Op Repulse, aged 24 years. He was serving with the Delta and Golf SB Teams in Victoria Province at the time of his death.

29-Aug-79 Gd F Makoni 1 Bn GF DOAS This battalion covered the line from Ft Victoria to Bubye.
