Today, 11 September, we salute and honor the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

11 Sep 1974: 05128004E Warrant Officer Class II Olaf Volmer Jensen from 2 SAI Died of Wounds at the hospital at Walvis Bay after sustaining multiple shrapnel wounds in an accidental hand grenade explosion. He was 44.

11 Sep 1977: 76927011SP Rifleman Rodriques Pedro from 32 Battalion was accidentally killed in an anti-personnel landmine explosion while assisting to lay a minefield during an operation in Southern Angola. He was 32.

11 Sep 1977: 63166268KT Corporal Albertus Petrus van Zyl from the Tygerberg Commando was Killed in Action when his Buffel Troop Carrier detonated a landmine near Oshigambo. He was 31.

11 Sep 1983: 72232945BG 2/Lieutenant Deon De Villiers from 3 Medical Battalion Group was killed in a military vehicle accident in Bloemfontein. He was 26.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR 

1978 – Rfn Wilhemus I. NYDAM, 8th Bn RR, was killed in a CT action.

1978 – FR Leslie Robert "Rob, "Bean" SMALLMAN, PATU, BSAP, was killed in an ambush on Charleswood Estate, 16km from Melsetter. He was aged 26. Michelle Mendonca (Rob's sister-in-law) writes, "Rob was ambushed on his way home to his Estate after dropping off my dad, Mike Ferreira, to catch the convoy. Rob did convoy duty the week before. He had his assistant manager, Andy, and some guards and Doberman dogs with him in his vehicle. The passengers all survived and were not hurt. Rob is survived by my sister, Rosemarie Smallman nee Ferreira, who was 7 months pregnant with their son and was named after his father, Robert Smallman.”1978 – DA Nyambuya A. TAURAYI, Regular, Intaf, died on active service.

1979 – FR Simon Richard EDRIDGE, PR, BSAP, was killed in a CT incident in the Wedza area, Op Thrasher, aged 27 years.
