Today, 14 September, we salute and honor the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

14 Sep1980: 76375674BG Rifleman Robert Edward Buchholtz from 4 SAI was killed in a private motor vehicle accident in East London while on a weekend pass. He was 20.

14 Sep 1985: 80080898PC Sergeant Peter Henry Anthony from 8 SAI was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned near Etale Base. He was 25.

14 Sep 1988: 85628279BG Sapper Andre’ Stephan Lategan from 5 Military Works Unit was accidentally killed on the Dwaalboom Road near Thabazimbi while loading a road grader. He went under the trailer to insert the retaining pin but the pin snapped causing both the trailer and grader to fall on him, killing him instantly. He was 21.

14 Sep 1985: 82358191BG T/Leading Marine Simon Games Auld from 1 Marine Brigade was killed in a private motor vehicle accident in Port Elizabeth. He was 19.

14 Sep 1992: 92680230AR Seaman Goodman Mthunzi Maphumulo from Naval Station SAS Jalsena accidentally drowned during a military training exercise at the Midmar Dam while he was undergoing Basic Military Training. He was 22.

14 Sep 1993: 88261003BT Lance Corporal Pieter Joachim Smith died from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained while at Broederstroom. He was 22.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR 

1977 – Tpr Mario Fernando DE CAMPOS and Cpl Theunis Johannes DU PREEZ, both of 1 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, were killed in a vehicle accident when the 2.5 they were travelling in rolled.

1977 – Dip Att James PANGANAYI, ADF, Intaf, was murdered by CTs.

1978 – FR Peter Alexander Gordon MCDONALD, PATU, BSAP, was killed in a CT action in the Wankie area, Op Tangent, at the age of 24.

1978 – Sgt Henzlet PHEDE, 3 Sqn RhE, was killed in an accidental explosion.

1979 – PO William John Albert "Billy" GLEN (20), Uniform, BSAP, was killed by a landmine in the West Nicholson area, Op Tangent. His father, Mr William Scott Glen, who was with him at the time, was also killed in the explosion. They were driving an unprotected vehicle, and had been on their way to visit their brother and son David, who was ranching in the area. Billy was on R&R at the time.
