Today, 18 September, we salute and honor the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

18 Sep 1969: 67929885N Rifleman Collin Arthur Williams from 4 SAI died from lung complications after participating in an unauthorised gas exercise held at the training grounds in Doornkop. He was 18.

18 Sep 1970: 68408459N Private Abraham Jacobus Goosen from 1 Air Depot was accidentally killed in a crane accident at Voortrekkerhoogte. He was 17.

18 Sep 1973: 72548431N Rifleman Terence Arthur Langley from 3 SAI died from a gunshot wound, accidentally self-inflicted while he was stationed at Rundu. He was 18.

18 Sep 1979: 76334911BG Corporal Andries Petrus Hanneman from Northern Transvaal Command was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident at Potgietersrus. He was 19.

18 Sep 1981: 79558441BG Rifleman Petrus Jacobus van Staden from 1 Parachute Battalion was killed in a private motor cycle accident on the Bloemfontein to Winburg Road. He was 18.

18 Sep 1981: 74296518BT Corporal Johannes Jacobus van Staden from the Transvaal Scottish died in a private motor vehicle accident. He was 23.

18 Sep 1986: 82244443BG Airman Hendrik Frensch van Zyl from the Air Force Base Hoedspruit Fire Section was found murdered by persons unknown at Linbro Park, Johannesburg near the Alexandra Township with a knife wound to the neck. He was on his way back to Base from a 7-Day Pass when he was murdered. He was 20.

18 Sep 1988: 84464296BG 2/Lieutenant Petrus Gerhardus Lourens Koen from 61 Mechanised Battalion Group was critically injured on 16 September 1988 when his Ratel overturned while traveling between Ogongo and Okalongo in Northern Owamboland. He was evacuated to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria where he succumbed to his injuries on 18 September 1988. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1973 – Tpr Kevin Anthony DONEGAN, 8 Trp, 2 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, was killed in a contact in Mukumbura TTL, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane, aged 22.

1977 – Cst Godfrey SOKA PDG (Post), Uniform, BSAP, was killed at the Beitbridge Rural Council beer hall, Op Repulse, at the age of 19. Godfrey, at the time off-duty and unarmed, together with a reservist, tackled one of four terrorists who had started shooting in the beerhall. Another terrorist shot and killed Godfrey. Both policemen were awarded the Police Decoration for Gallantry for their actions, Godfrey's being a posthumous award.

1978 – Gd Rapson MAKAMURE, PV Prtn Group, GF, died on active service.

1978 – Pte Isaac Ronny NEMANWA, 1st Bn RAR, died from "friendly fire" in an air strike.

1979 – Lt William Leslie "Willie" LOXTON and Cpl Kufa BUKU, both of 2 Tp, A Sqn G/Scts, died from wounds received in a contact, Chomabonda Vlei, near Vic Falls, Op Tangent. The contact against a large group of ZIPRA, lasted for a long time.

1979 – Cst Lovemore MOYO, 5 PROPOL, BSAP, died from an accidental shooting while off duty. 

VICTIMS OF TERROR: AFGHANISTAN 2012

Eight South African civilians, all working for a private Aviation Company in Afghanistan were killed in the early hours of the morning on 18 September 2012 while travelling to Kabul International Airport. Their minibus vehicle was rammed and blown up by a female suicide bomber driving a small sedan vehicle packed with explosives. The Afghan extremist group Hezb-e-Islami later claimed responsibility for the incident saying that it was in response to an anti-Islamic video that had recently been released in the United States. The casualties in this incident were:

  • Christian Johannes Pretorius from Pretoria. He was 30.
  • Fraser Angus Carey from Johannesburg. He was 31.
  • Brandon Quinn Booth from Balgowan, KZN. He was 47.
  • Johan Abraham van Huyssteen from Port Elizabeth. He was 31.
  • Johan Frederick Bouchaud from Johannesburg. He was 30.
  • Johannes Judenis Humphries from Centurion. He was 65.
  • Steven Leong from Johannesburg. He was 31.
  • Jenny Margaret Ayris (Living in Scotland). She was 46
