Today, 19 September, we salute and honor the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

19 Sep 1978: 70398417BT Rifleman John James Hearn Cloete from the Rand Light Infantry was accidentally killed in a mortar bomb explosion at the Swartland Training Area near Rundu. He was 23.

19 Sep 1983: Special Constable U. Ndiaombe from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 31.

19 Sep 1984: 81014680BG Rifleman David Schalk van der Merwe from 1 SAI died from a gunshot wound sustained as a result of an accidental discharge of a fellow soldiers rifle while at the De Brug Training Area. He was 18.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1974 – L/Cpl Charles Philip LORD, Spt Grp, 1st Bn RLI, died from gunshot wounds in a contact, Kandeya TTL, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane, aged 24 years.

1978 – Spr Frank Sinclair WARNER, 1 Sqn, RhE, died from injuries received in a vehicle accident.

1979 – Sgt Ronald James FOX, 1 Bn, GF, was killed on active service.

1979 – Cpl Mohamede PHIRI, RHQ Delta, Op Tangent, GF, died on active service.

1979 – FR Thomas David THORNILEY, PR, BSAP, died in Andrew Fleming Hospital, Salisbury, after falling ill during his annual training aged 46 years.
