Today, 21 September, we salute and honor the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

21 Sep 1966: 55404 Able Seaman Phillipus Johannes Havenga from SAS Simonsberg was killed in a diving training accident in False Bay. He was 20.

21 Sep 1971: 66211863E Candidate Officer Hendrik Oswald Meyer Odendaal from Flying Training School Langebaanweg was killed when his Atlas MB326M Impala Mk I, Serial No. 504, crashed in the Kouebokke Mountains near Citrusdal while carrying out a solo night Navigation exercise. Spatial disorientation (Vertigo) was the suspected cause of the accident. He was 20.

21 Sep 1978: 73427494BG Rifleman JC Du Plessis from 11 Commando Regiment was critically wounded in a shooting incident at Etale Base. He later succumbed to his wounds in 1 Military Hospital. He was 21.

21 Sep 1978: 70220991PE Sergeant Hendrik Gerhardus van der Merwe from 1 Reconnaissance Regiment attached "D" Squadron Rhodesian Special Air Service was accidentally killed during a Rhodesian Air Force Vampire air strike on enemy positions during Operation Snoopy. He was 23.

21 Sep 1982: 76905249SP Rifleman Dumba Catumbele from 201 Battalion SWATF was killed in an accidental explosion in an ammunition bunker at Omega. He was 23.

21 Sep 1988: 86231719BG Rifleman Douw Cornet from 7 SAI attached to 202 Battalion SWATF was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned at Mashari. He was 19.

21 Sep 1989: 88742564JD Rifleman Rivers Ammon Sibuyi from the Kruger National Park Commando was killed after being attacked by a lion while on foot patrol in the Northern section of the Kruger National Park. He was 31. 

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – DSA Josephat MBIZA, Kp Prtn, Intaf KIA, died from gunshot wounds received in a CT action, Op Repulse. Died aged 22.

1978 – L/Cpl Stephen Michael Campbell "Steve" DONNELLY, C Sqn SAS, was killed in a '"friendly fire"' incident by a Vampire FB9 on Op Snoopy. Op Snoopy was a combined SAS, RLI assault on camps in Chimoio.
