Today, 27 September, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

27 Sep 1981: 76901255SP Rifleman America Jose from 32 Battalion was shot dead by a fellow soldier during an argument at Buffalo. He was 26.

27 Sep 1982: 75297598BT Private Renier Nicolaas Johannes Grobler from 3 Satellite Radar Station at Mafeking was killed in a private motor vehicle accident hear Ottoshoop while doing a compulsory 30 day camp. He was 22.

27 Sep 1982: 69011575BV Staff Sergeant Willem Petrus Burger from South African Army Headquarters died at 1 Military Hospital after suffering a fatal heart attack. He was serving in a temporary capacity having reached retirement age. He was 62.

27 Sep 1984: Two members from 2 Special Service Battalion were accidentally killed when their SAMIL 20 overturned at Groot Marico after the front tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The casualties were:

  • 80403264BG Trooper Jeams Andries Solomon Theodorus Randall. He was 20.
  • 81327694BG Trooper Frans Hendrik Jansen van Vuuren. He was 19.

27 Sep 1985: 79218160BG Rifleman Coenraad Johannes Jacobus Bel from 4 SAI was killed in a private motor vehicle accident while on weekend pass. He was 22.

26 Sep 1990: 85083319BW Corporal Freek Johannes Palmer from the Cape Regiment Died of Wounds after being shot by an unknown gunman using a home-made weapon while he was on foot patrol in Kwamashu. He succumbed to his wounds in Addington Hospital later in the day. He was 26.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Pte Arthur JOBSON, 6 Prtn Coy, RDR, died in a vehicle accident, Ruda, Holdenby TTL, Mutasa, Op Thrasher. Died aged 18.

1977 – Pte R. CHANETSA, 3 Maint Unit, RhASC, died in an accidental shooting.

1978 – DSA Clemence CHIPANERA, DSA Chawawona HUKUIMWE, DSA Tambudzayi MUSHANI and DSA Samukute TAZVIZIVA, all of Kp Prtn, Intaf, were killed in a landmine explosion. Elements of Intaf had been escorting Ministry of Health staff in the Mrewa TTL on one of their periodic visits to rural clinics, when their vehicle detonated a landmine. As they debussed, ZANLA terrorists, waiting in ambush, opened fire on the Rhodesians, killing the four DSAs. Australian-born nurse Jennifer Hebe BOYD was also shot and killed. Jennifer was posthumously made a Member of the Legion of Merit.

1979 – Spr Lovemore NYIKA, 7 Sqn RhE, died in a shooting accident.

1979 – Tpr Gert Stephanus O’NEILL, S Scouts, was killed by a gunshot whilst trench-clearing in a ZANLA base, Monte Cassino, near Chimoio, Mozambique, on Op Miracle. He was 21 years old.

1979 – Aux Cst Henry TAKAWIRA, BSAP, was killed in a vehicle accident, aged 36.

1979 – Rfn Edward Kuziwa TARUMBWA, Depot RR, died on active service.
