Today, 1 October, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

01 Oct 1958: Captain A.P. Barnard from 1 Locating Battery, South African Artillery was killed in a private motor vehicle accident between Johannesburg and Potchefstroom. He had been authorised to travel to Potchefstroom using his private transport to attend an official training course. He was 29.

01 Oct 1974: 05564265E Staff Sergeant Willem Jacobus Burger from D Squadron, 2 Special Service Battalion was accidentally shot dead by own forces in an ambush 7 miles East of Katima Mulilo at Hippo Island, Eastern Caprivi. He was 29.

01 Oct 1982: 77618080BG Lance Corporal Edmond Jaime Leon Guillaume from the South African Medical Corps Headquarters Unit died after taking an overdose of pills while stationed in Grootfontein. He was 20.

01 Oct 1983: 80386089BG Rifleman Quinton Clive Oosthuizen from 203 Battalion SWATF was killed in a military vehicle accident in Northern Owamboland. He was 19.

01 Oct 1983: 81316291BG Rifleman Samuel Wilhelm van Rooyen from Infantry School was critically injured in a private motor vehicle accident near Cape Town on the 29 September 1983 and succumbed to his injuries in the Tygerberg Hospital on 1 October 1983. He was 18.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1974 – Rfn Alan Robert SEAGER (19), 2 Bde, attached Intaf, and DA Andreas WUNGANAYI, Regular Intaf, were both killed by a landmine at Concession, Op Hurricane.

1977 – Gd Fidias ZIMUNA, PV Prtn Group, GF, was killed in action.

1977 – Rfn Joachim DE VOS, Sgt J.P.A. FURSTENBURG, Rfn Cornelius LOURENS, and Cpl Leslie MULLER, all of the Army (units unknown), died in separate shooting accidents (dates in the month unknown).

1977 – WO2 Christopher BOTES, unit unknown, Army, Sgt Maj Sylvester DZAPASI, unit unknown, Army, Gd G. MAMVURA, PV Prtn Group, GF, DSA Jeremiah Bope MAWADZE, Kp Prtn, Intaf, Pte John MAYNARD, unit unknown, Army, Pte A. MUSHONGA, 2 Maint Unit, RhASC, and Timothy NCUBE, Tribal Militia, Intaf, all died on active service (dates in the month unknown).

1978 – Cpl James William BOER, 1st Bn, RDR, was killed in a CT action at the age of 28 years 

1978 – DSA Peter CHIHATA, Kp Prtn, Intaf, was killed by a landmine.

1978 – DSA B. CHAMAMBO, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.

1978 – Kp Comm G. NKOMO, PV Prtn Group, GF, died on active service.

1979 – Pte Freddy MPOFU, B Coy, 8th Bn, RR, was killed when his vehicle was in a collision with a railway locomotive.

1979 – AC NYAMAYARO, GSU, RhAF, died on active service.
