Today, 4 October, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

04 Oct 1974: W57177M Constable Jacobus Wynand Cloete from the South African Police was accidentally killed while serving in Rhodesia after he suffered a gunshot wound to the neck at Kazakili near Victoria Falls, Rhodesia. He was 20.

04 Oct 1977: 70393939PM Lieutenant John Melville Purdon from 11 Squadron was Reported Missing after his Cessna 185A, Serial No. 733 failed to return from a routine low level cross-country training flight. The aircraft wreck was later located at Rysmiersbult near Potchefstroom and his body was successfully recovered. He was 22.

04 Oct 1983: 79400982BG Rifleman Jan Ignatius Rigaard from Infantry School was killed in a private motor vehicle accident approximately 50km from Murraysburg while travelling on the Richmond to Beaufort West road. He was 20.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1973 – T/L/Cpl Michael Charles BAILEY (23), 1st Bn, RLI, died on active service.

1976 – Gnr Donald Kingsley FULTON, 1st Field Regt, RhA, died in a vehicle accident, New Year’s Gift Store, 20 km from Chipinga, Op Thrasher. Died aged 28.

1977 – L/Cpl Thomas BANGA, 2nd Bn, RAR, died on active service.

1977 – L/Cpl Peter Martin "Pete" GARNETT, 11 Tp, 3 Cdo, 1st Bn, was killed in a CT action in the Op Thrasher area. He received an MFC (Ops) for being "particularly aggressive" during the Battle of Hill 31 in Mutasa TTL on 15 November 1976.

1978 – Cst Aloice Ignacious MAKHONDO (25), Aux Cst Erinos MARILELE (28), Sgt Leonard MATSHALAGA (25) and Sgt Maj Rufu Charles MUYEZWA (40), all of the BSAP, were killed in a CT action in the Maranda TTL, Nuanetsi area, Op Repulse.

1978 – DSA June PAURO, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.
