Today, 14 October, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

14 Oct 1970: 01181007E Commandant Johannes Frederick "Doons" van Heerden from 24 Squadron was killed when his Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S-50, Serial No. 418 crashed on the weapons range West of Bloemfontein while carrying out a low level “retarded bomb” sortie. "Doons" van Heerden and his Navigator Captain G. M. Joubert both ejected. Captain Joubert survived but by the time "Doons" van Heerden's ejection seat functioned, the aircraft was virtually inverted and the ejection seat fired straight into the ground killing him instantly. He was 34.

14 Oct 1977: 08093777KV Lieutenant Phillipus Lodewyk Le Roux from the Delmas Commando was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents near the Cut-Line. He was 48.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Cpl Anthony John HARDY (19), 3(Indep) Coy, RR, and Temp WO 2 Roderick Charles HAYWORTH (38) and Rfn Alan Gray LOVIE (27), both of F Coy, 4th Bn, RR, all died from multiple injuries from a mortar and small arms attack; not too far southwest of their forward base in Buhera district.

1977 – L/Cpl Anthony Maxwell HARMER, 1st Bn, RLI, died in a vehicle accident.

1977 – Rct L. HLABISO, Depot, RAR, died on active service.

1977 – Pte Tarirayi KUREBWA, 2nd Bn, RAR, died on active service.

1979 – Tpr Henry Lawrence H. "Geordie" FURNESS, Recce Tp, Spt Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, was killed in the Op Thrasher area.
