Today, 18 October, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

18 Oct 1968: 05570718E Lieutenant John Andrew Zimmerman from Central Flying School Dunnottar was killed when his AT-6 Harvard, Serial No 7519 crashed near Devon while on a routine training flight. He was 21.

18 Oct 1980: 74090002PE Sergeant Jonathan Sykes from the Infantry School was killed in a private motor vehicle accident on the National Road near Ladysmith. He was 30.

18 Oct 1984: 82723487SP Rifleman Domingos Antonio from 32 Battalion was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned near Buffalo. He was 24

18 Oct 1986: Special Constable Simon Daniel from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 29.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1973 – 2 Lt Robin Stanley "Rob" HUGHES, Tracker, CU, S Scouts, was killed by a gunshot wound in crossfire during a pseudo op and contact with ZANLA, Centenary, Op Hurricane. Aged 33, Rob was a territorial officer on call-up who had volunteered to serve with the Selous Scouts.

1977 – DSA July George MOYO and DSA Samuel Phiri MOYO, both of Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.

1977 – DSA Clement NDLOVU and DSA Joseph NDOU, both of Kp Prtn, Intaf, were killed in a vehicle ambush just before Toporo rest camp, Beitbridge district Op Tangent.

1978 – Spr Barbton SIBANDA, 1 Sqn, RhE, was killed in an accidental explosion.
