Today, 24 October, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

24 Oct 1976: 74542929BG Rifleman Ignatius Phillippus Coetzee, acting as the Patrol medic for an Infantry Patrol was Killed in Action near Eenhana. While walking through the bush, the sniffer dog suddenly stopped and lay down, alerting the handler of an impending danger but for some unexplained reason, Coetzee just carried on walking. He did not get far before he unfortunately stepped onto a booby-trapped Yugoslavian TMA-3 Cheese Mine and was killed instantly in the explosion. He was 18.

24 Oct 1983: 77464278PE Corporal Pedro Giovanni Torre from 7 SAI was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned at Lataba Ranch near Phalaborwa. He was 20.

24 Oct 1986: 67285361PE Sergeant Gerhardus Hendrik van der Westhuizen from the South African Corps of Military Police was killed when his military motorcycle was struck by a truck while overtaking about 8km from Lindley. He fell under the wheels of the truck. He was 35.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1973 –Rfn Carlos Alberto de Arjuajo "Patrick" CASAL, 4 Trp, 1 Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, was killed by a gunshot wound, Seguranca, Tete Province, Mozambique aged 20 years. Twelve members of 4 Troop were deployed to find a suspected ZANLA camp, and upon finding the camp with an estimated 200 CTs, a further twenty men were sent in. The troops overran the well concealed camp, accounting for a large number of CTs. On their return they stopped for a smoke break when they were ambushed and Carlos shot by a CT using a PPSH Russian-made sub-machine gun.

1974 – Pte Zive RUZIVE, HQ, 2 Bde, died in a vehicle accident, Dote Valley Road, Bindura, Op Hurricane, at the age of 25.

1977 – Ext Asst Alfred FUNGURA, ADF, Intaf, was murdered by CTs.

1979 – Cpl Lionel Barry FOURIE, P Troop, 10 Sqn, RhSigs, died from a gunshot wound.

1979 - DSA Tanson NYONI, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.
