Today, 30 October, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

30 Oct 1979: 77381051BG Rifleman Dirk Cornelius Odendaal from the SADF Dog Training Centre attached to 16 Maintenance Unit was killed at Grootfontein after being struck by a bullet resulting from the accidental discharge of a fellow soldiers rifle while in the barracks. He was 18..

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Sgt Johane GONDORO (51), Uniform, BSAP, and DA MUSHONGA Regular Intaf , were shot and killed by terrorists while on leave, Musembura TTL, Bindura. Johane made no attempt to conceal his identity, and as he walked forward, he was tied up, together with off-duty DA Mushonga, and brutally murdered.

1976 – Rfn Deon McAlistair WHITE BCR (Post), C Coy, 10th Bn, RR, died from a gunshot wound sustained in action on 28 October, at the age of 20. He was mortally wounded in the head while exposed to enemy fire and kneeling to clear a jammed MAG. His BCR citation states that, over several days and covering 12 km, he personally tracked and engaged a group of CTs. Many of the contacts were at close quarters. He ended up personally accounting for 5 CT kills. He was commended for his outstanding qualities of leadership, tracking ability and personal bravery, inspiring all those who worked with him.

1978 – Cst Levie CHINAKWE, K Tp, SU, BSAP, was killed in a river contact, at the age of 21. Tragically, his body was never found after the contact.

1978 – Aux Cst Themba KHUMALO (21), BSAP, died in Mpilo Hospital, Bulawayo, from injuries received in a vehicle accident the previous day. Themba, together with Aux Cst Jefias Makotsa, who was also killed, were travelling from Bulawayo to Ft Victoria for training when the accident occurred. Several other Auxilliary Constables and Police Reservists were seriously injured in the accident.

1979 – Cpl Martin L. DAY, 5 Sqn, RhE, died in a vehicle accident.

1979 – Rct Martin MACHA, Reg Army, died from shrapnel wounds received in a CT action.

1979 – Rfn Frank Robert WIGGILL, 10th Bn, RR, died from gunshot wounds in a CT action.
