Today, 2 November, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

02 Nov 1979: Two members from 1 SAI were killed when their private motor vehicle drove into the rear of a truck on Van Reenen's Pass while they were on a weekend pass. The casualties were:

  • 77450062BG Lance Corporal Kevin Donald Fison. He was 18.
  • 77496990BG Rifleman Gregory Ormond Barker. He was 18.

02 Nov 1980: 80895691HE Rifleman Naledzani Asher Netshidzivhani from 112 Battalion died from injuries accidentally sustained in a military motor vehicle accident on 1 Nov 1980. He was a member of a SADF soccer team and was traveling as a passenger in a military vehicle when it overturned 10km north of Makuya in Venda. He was 20.

02 Nov 1982: 82304064BG Rifleman Gideon Breytenbach from 11 Commando Regiment was killed in a private motor vehicle accident on the Witbank Highway. He was 19.

02 Nov 1984: 81966293SWH Corporal M. Mbinge from 102 Battalion SWATF accidentally drowned while crossing a river during operations against SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Southern Angola. He was 24.

02 Nov 1986: 82353459BG Lance Corporal Albertus Marthinus le Roux from 7 SAI was Killed in Action when his horse detonated a landmine planted by MK Operatives at Diepgezet near Barberton as part of Ops Ceshwayo. He was 20. The three MK Operatives responsible for laying the mines were later granted amnesty.

02 Nov 1989: 89201065BG Trooper Rodger Eric Patterson from 1 Special Service Battalion suffered multiple skull fractures when he was accidentally crushed between a SAMIL 20 truck and a trailer at the Army Battle School Lohatla. He was 21.

02 Nov 1990: 85061208BW Rifleman Mentoor Jacobs from the Cape Regiment was killed in a military vehicle accident on the Inanda Highway. He was 24.

02 Nov 1990: 88594403BG Trooper Leon Ferreira from 2 Special Service Battalion was killed at Zeerust when his Samil 50 (Honey-sucker) with a half liquid load took a turn too fast and overturned, rolling about 50 meters down a steep embankment. He apparently pushed his passenger down into the footwell when the vehicle started to overturn and his brave actions resulted in the passenger surviving with only minor injuries. Leon Ferreira was stationed at Nietverdiend, about 60 km North of Zeerust at the time of the accident. He was 18

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1978 – Capt Arthur Charles BEAMISH, 5th Bn, RR, was murdered by CTs on his farm in the Horseshoe Block, Sipolilo, Op Hurricane, whilst in between service with 5RR. Arthur is the brother of Raymond Beamish who was KIA a few months after Arthur.

1978 – PO Jonathan Charles "Ginge" CALLAWAY , SU, BSAP, was killed in a contact in the Mtoko farming area, Op Hurricane. Died aged 21.

1978 – Gd S. MAHONDE , PV Prtn Group, GF, died on active service.

1979 – Cpl Gavin Andrew MILLER, 1st Bn, RR, died from gunshot wounds in a CT action. Ex SAS.

1979 – Tpr William Robert WIXLEY, S Scouts, died from gunshot wounds on Op Murex (external).

1979 – Aux Cst Lazarus ZHANUNDI, BSAP, was killed in a CT action, at the age of 29.
