Today, 3 November, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

03 Nov 1967: Two members from 17 Squadron were accidentally killed when their Alouette III Helicopter, Serial No.59, struck High Tension cables and crashed 3 miles north of Verulam while transporting three civilian members from the Department of Water Affairs. The SAAF casualties were:

  • 6600076PE 2/Lieutenant (Pilot) Anthony Siege Foxon. He was 23.
  • 07228794E Air Corporal (Flight Engineer) Johannes Christoffel Steyn. He was 27

03 Nov 1973: 70508080N Trooper Jan Adriaan Smit van Heerden from the School of Armour died from injuries accidentally sustained during training. He was 19.

03 Nov 1980: 77454007BG Rifleman Leon Bester from 6 SAI was killed when his private vehicle overturned on the road between Queenstown and Sterkstroom. He was returning to Camp from a weekend pass. He was 19.

03 Nov 1983: 78325826BT Corporal Gregory Frederick Beelders from 18 Corps was killed when the military vehicle in which he was traveling, struck a storm water bridge at Kamanjab. He was 21

03 Nov 1989: 78910775PD Rifleman Manuel S. Antonio from 32 Battalion was accidentally killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned near Pomfret. He was 44.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1970 – PO Neville Anthony SEXTON, Uniform, BSAP, died from head injuries sustained in a road accident on the Que Que/Gatooma road. He was 21 years old.

1976 – Cst Francis MADHENDE, CPU, BSAP, was killed by terrorists in Budja African Purchase Area, Buhera district, aged 20. Francis, on leave at the time, was a passenger in a car driven by a friend, when the vehicle was ambushed by CTs and set on fire, causing the occupants to burn to death.

1978 – Aux Cst Jfias Kaiza MAKOTSA, BSAP, died in Mpilo Hospital, Bulawayo, from injuries received in a vehicle accident on 29 October. He was 29 years old. Jefias, together with Aux Cst Themba Khumalo who was also killed, were travelling from Bulawayo to Ft Victoria for training when the accident occurred. Several other Auxilliary Constables and Police Reservists were seriously injured in the accident.

1978 – D/Sgt MARITI, CID, BSAP, and Cst Shonayi ZISANI, SU, BSAP, both died in a vehicle accident, when the Land Rover in which they were travelling lost control and struck an electricity pole.

1978 – Cst Noah Tshuma, Uniform, BSAP, was killed in a shooting accident, at the age of 19.
