Today, 9 November, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

09 Nov 1979: 75244400BG Trooper Paul Stephanus Buys from 1 SSB was Killed in Action when his Eland 90 Armoured Car detonated a landmine while carrying out a patrol in Northern Owamboland. He was 20.

09 Nov 1979: 76508233BG Rifleman Frederick Christoffel van den Berg from 4 SAI was Killed in Action when his Buffel Troop Carrier detonated a landmine in Northern Owamboland. He was 19.

09 Nov 1980: 78233715BG Corporal Josias Johannes Botha from Infantry School was killed in a private motor vehicle accident in George while on weekend pass. He was 19.

09 Nov 1980: 78617271BG Lance Corporal Roy Taylor from the Infantry School was critically injured in a private motor vehicle accident near Somerset West on 8 November 1980. He succumbed to his injuries in the Tygerberg Hospital on 9 November 1980. He was 18.

09 Nov 1982: 78295466BG Sapper Adriaan Francois van Wyngaardt from 2 Field Engineer Regiment was Killed in Action when he detonated a boosted Anti-Personnel Mine during minesweeping and clearing Operations in Northern Owamboland. He was 19.

09 Nov 1983: 80359672BG Airman Jan Joachim Janse van Rensburg attached to Air Force Base Ondangwa was killed when the Buffel Troop Carrier in which he was travelling as a passenger, was involved in a collision with a South African Police Casspir in Ondangwa town. He was 18.

09 Nov 1987: Two members from 4 SAI attached to 62 Mechanised Battalion Group were Killed in Action during Ops Modular when their Ratel 20, Callsign 21C was knocked out while trying to engage a Soviet T-55 tank with the Ratel 20mm Cannon. The Ratel Gunner, Rifleman Adrian Murray Thom successfully shot out a T-55 tank when the 20mm armour-piercing rounds penetrated the T-55 between the Turret and the Tank Hull. Unfortunately, the T-55 tank returned fire and the 100mm High Explosive projectile penetrated the Ratel through the drivers cap killing both men instantly. Both young men were Posthumously awarded the Honoris Crux for their heroism and self-sacrifice in the face of extreme danger and overwhelming odds. They were:

  • 83309377BG Rifleman Frederick Augustus Muhlenbeck (Driver) HC (P). He was 19.
  • 85487072BG Rifleman Adrian Murray Thom (Gunner) HC (P). He was 19

09 Nov 1987: Four members from 4 SAI were Killed in Action during Ops Modular when their Ratel 20, Callsign 21B was knocked out by a 23mm Soviet ZU-23-2 Anti-Aircraft Cannon deployed in a ground defence role. They were:

  • 78236700BG Sergeant Pierre James Digue. He was 28.
  • 84370873BG Corporal Theunis Antonie Duvenhage. He was 19.
  • 84533702BG Rifleman Anthony Stewart. He was 20.
  • 85918027BG Rifleman Pieter Gerrit Claasen. He was 19.

09 Nov 1997: 76901321PE Rifleman Orlando Da Silva from 2 SAI was killed in an accidental mortar bomb explosion at Pelonomi during a training exercise. He was 42.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Rfn Nicholas James Henry "Nick" GREGORY, 1 POU, COI, died from gunshot wounds in a contact, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane. Following a major contact late that afternoon in which several terrorists were killed, the security forces split into two groups for the night. As Nick and his stick were settling in, a lone terrorist, separated from the main group, fired a random burst, resulting in a stray bullet entering Nick's chest. He died in the casevac helicopter en route to Mt Darwin. Died aged 25.

1978 – DSA Godfrey MANTSHONTSHO, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.

1979 – FR Kingsley Eric HARRIS, PR, BSAP, died from wounds received in action in the Marandellas area, Op Thrasher, at the age of 38.
