Today, 12 November, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

12 Nov 1963: 45480 Bombardier Gideon Jacobus Visser from 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment was killed in a military vehicle accident. He was 33.

12 Nov 1974: 72434848N Rifleman Barend Johannes Andries Vorster from 2 SAI disappeared after going to collect water from the river at Bagani. He was seen to suddenly disappear under the water and it is thought that he may have been taken by a crocodile. He has no known grave. He was 18

12 Nov 1975 72475403BA Rifleman Gideon Joubert Klopper from 3 SAI was killed instantly after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm at Omgoni while busy with an agricultural task in No. 3 Sub Area. He was 19.

12 Nov 1975: 7151108N Rifleman Bartholomeus Venter from 11 Commando Regiment was Killed in Action by enemy mortar fire during a contact with enemy forces while participating in Operation Savannah. He was 20.

12 Nov 1980: 77322782BG Rifleman Nicolaas Jacobus van der Walt from 3 SAI attached to 53 Battalion was accidentally killed in Northern Owamboland when a hand grenade exploded while he was still handling it. He was 19.

12 Nov 1983: 81228116BG Rifleman Pierre Hanekom from 8 SAI was Killed in Action near Chiede in Southern Angola while carrying out a daily inspection of an SADF minefield that was laid to prevent insurgent infiltration from the North. During this inspection, one of the claymore mines was accidentally triggered and exploded, killing him instantly. . He was 18.

12 Nov 1985: 81196859BG 2/Lieutenant Robert Allan Broekmeyer from 2 SAI died in the Windhoek Hospital from wounds received during a shooting incident at the Swartkoppe Shooting Range. He was 20.

12 Nov 1985: 80234933BG Rifleman Andrew Steward Dougall from Natal Command collapsed and died of suspected heart failure while running a 2.4 at 84 Motorised Brigade around Greyville race course. Andrew was described by his colleagues as a gentle soul who was brought up by his grandmother. She had passed away earlier in the year. He was 21.

12 Nov 1991: 88469606BG Lance Corporal Petrus Hendrik Theodorus Tait from 6 SAI was killed when the South African Police Boerbok vehicle in which he was travelling as a passenger, overturned near Richmond. He was thrown from the vehicle and crushed when the vehicle rolled over him. He was 19

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Cst Conrad MACHINGAUTA, Uniform, BSAP, was killed by terrorists in Makoni TTL, aged 38. Whilst on leave at his home, a gang of CTs interrupted a beerdrink. He was identified as a member of the BSAP, and then shot in front of his wife and other kraal-dwellers. He was unarmed.

1976 – Cpl Joseph Dominic Dolphi STOKI, RDR, died in a vehicle accident on the Melfort Road, at the age of 24.

1976 – Sgt Gregory John WEST, 3(Indp) Coy RR, died from gunshot wounds in a contact, Op Thrasher, at the age of 19. His stick were chilling out listening to Sally Donaldson near a store in the Chikore TTL - roughly in the area of 17.69350S 32.517977E.

1977 – DSA Donald KHUMALO, Kp Prtn, Intaf, was murdered by CTs.

1977 – Cst Kiwa LINDANI (21), Uniform - Dog Handler, BSAP, and Cst Sulpisio MUCHEMWA (27), Uniform, BSAP, were both killed by an anti-personnel mine during follow-up operations, Tjolotjo district, Op Tangent.

1978 – DA George MUPAMBWA, B Tp, ARU (Mash East), Intaf, died in a vehicle ambush, Wedza, Op Thrasher. Mupambwa was a passenger, with a Bren gun, in the front of a Land Rover driven by ‘B’ Troop commander SDO Dudley Wall, when several bullets came through the windscreen. Several entered Mupambwa's head, killing him instantly. Dudley Wall survived a bullet wound to his head.

1978 – Pte Reason NCUBE and Pte Rabson TAKARUVINGA, C Coy, 4th Bn RR, were both killed in a CT action.

1979 – DSA Timothy KADUNGURE, Kp Prtn, Intaf, was killed in a contact.

1979 – Pte Michael KANJANI, A Coy, 2nd Bn RAR, died of gunshot wounds received in a CT action.
