Today, 13 November, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

13 Nov 1975: 71537724BC 2/Lieutenant Christopher James Robin from 4 Field Artillery was deployed into South East Angola early November 1975. He had just completed a 10-day patrol when the next platoon had to move out and take up an ambush position on the Zambian/Angolan border. While travelling to the ambush site to drop off the relieving platoon, his Unimog detonated a landmine that went off directly under his seat. He was critically injured and grieviously burnt in the explosion and although the Ops Medic and fellow officer tried their best to keep him alive until he could be evacuated, he succumbed to his wounds before this was possible. He was 20.

13 Nov 1979: 79841219HO Rifleman P.S. Lafitila from Sector 70 Headquarters SWATF was critically injured in a military vehicle accident on 06 November 1979. He unfortunately succumbed to his injuries in hospital on 13 November 1979. He was 20.

13 Nov 1986: Two members from 2 and 5 Reconnaissance Regiment were Killed in Action during Ops Colosseum when two Casspir vehicles were knocked out during a Special Forces raid against a SWAPO/PLAN Base near Xangongo in Southern Angola. The casualties were:

75338285BT Corporal Andries Dawid Renken from 2 Recce was killed when his Casspir was hit by RPG-7 Anti-Tank Rockets and Yugoslavian M60 HEAT STRIM Anti-Tank Rifle Grenades during an attack. The projectiles started a fire inside the vehicle that could not be extinguished due to the ongoing contact. The contents of the vehicle namely, 50kg of PE4 Explosive, Cortex, Detonators, M26 Hand Grenades and a Gas Bottle exploded, wrecking the vehicle completely. He was 27.

81521643PB Corporal Marsh Lazarus Mashavave from 5 Recce was killed in Action when his Casspir was also hit by a Soviet RPG-7 Anti-Tank rocket during the same action. He was 30.

13 Nov 1988: 85099067BG Rifleman Jacobus Gert Bock from 53 Battalion received a severe skull fracture after being assaulted by members of the local population outside the base. He was flown back to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria where he succumbed to his injuries later in the day. He was 23.

13 Nov 1990: 89065452CK Corporal Gert Gerhardus Boorman from the South African Cape Corps was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned during a training exercise between Tarraririma and Vorstershoop. He was 20.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1975 – Cpl John Barry "Chunkie" GRAHAM, S Scouts, was killed in a shooting accident at Kariba. Chunky was on a "crack and thump" exercise when a bullet ricocheted off a tree and hit him in the head. He died hours later. Died aged 22.

1976 – DA Willas CHINYOWA, Regular, Intaf, died from gunshot wounds received in a terrorist ambush, Kazozo Kraal, Inyanga North TTL, Op Thrasher. He was 27 years old.

1976 – L/Cpl Anthony Robin COGHILL, 4(Indp) Coy, RR, died in a vehicle accident. Died aged 22.

1977 – PO Noel Richard JACKSON, SB - on attach, BSAP, was killed in a contact, Honde Valley, Op Thrasher, aged 24.
