Today, 15 November, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 


15 Nov 1971: 5172 Section Officer Hugh Ross-Kent, a South African National serving in the Rhodesian British South Africa Police Uniformed Branch, died after apparently suffering a fatal heart attack. He was 33.

15 Nov 1980: 76928720SP Corporal Quintino Abel from 32 Battalion was Reported Missing when he disappeared after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming in the Okavango River near Buffalo Base. He was no known grave and remains unaccounted for. He was 24.

15 Nov 1982: 72365984BT Rifleman Jacobus Albertus van Zyl from the Kimberley Commando was killed instantly after being struck by lightning while participating in a training exercise at Schmidtsdrift. He was 26.

15 Nov 1986: Two members of 1 Parachute Battalion were killed when the Casspir in which they were travelling, overturned near Tsande while travelling from Ombalantu to Ondangwa. The casualties were:

  • 79303806PE Corporal Thomas Wilhelm Janse van Rensburg. He was 23.
  • 83480749BG Rifleman Christo Badenhorst. He was 20.

15 Nov 1990: 87498465BG Trooper Warren John Pieters from 1 Special Service Battalion was killed in a military vehicle accident approximately 25km from Koopmansfontein. He was 19.


1966 – L/Cpl John Gibson KORB, 1 Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, died of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident near Makuti. He was 20 years old. Gnr Geoffrey Schonnberg died five days later from injuries sustained in this accident.

1971 – SO Hugh ROSS-KENT, Uniform, BSAP, tragically died whilst on a training run, aged 33 years old.

1976 – Cst Clarius CHIKASHA, N Tp, SU, BSAP, died from gunshot wounds to the chest in a contact at Bveke, Mount Darwin, Op Hurricane. Died aged 21.

1976 – Tpr Fransisco Daurté DA COSTA, 11 Tp, 3 Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, died from a gunshot wound in a contact, Battle of Hill 31, Mutasa TTL, Mutasa district, Op Thrasher (VQ744430), aged 31 years. He was shot and killed by a lone terrorist running away from the sweep line. He was casevaced to Ruda and then Umtali. 31 CTs were killed in this 12-hour combined RLI/RAR/4RR Tracker Unit/10RR/RhAF battle in the Honde Valley.

1979 – Cst Charles MADZVIKO, Uniform, BSAP, was killed in a CT action, Op Repulse, at the age of 23.

1979 – Cst Rodgers Ngoni MUNODAWAFA, was killed in a vehicle accident, aged 23 years.

1979 – Rfn John O'BRIEN, 6th Bn, RR, was killed in an ambush on the Mashaba road whilst on his way to a call-up.

1979 – Aux Sec Ldr Titus ROBERT, BSAP, was killed in a CT action in the Nuanetsi area, Op Repulse, at the age of 27.
