Today, 26 November, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

26 Nov 1969: 01238361E Major Johannes Petrus Britz LWD from 1 Squadron SAAF was killed instantly near Pietersburg, when his Canadair CL13B Sabre, Serial Number 368 suffered catastrophic engine failure and caught fire while he was carrying out bombing practice exercises at the Roodewal Bombing Range. He remained with the aircraft, guiding it away from dwellings but ejected too late and struck the ground before the parachute had deployed. He was 29.

26 Nov 1973: 70299235N Rifleman Leon Holscher from 2 SAI was Reported Missing after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming in the Cunene River. He has no known grave. He was 19

26 Nov 1975: Two members from 2 Parachute Regiment were killed during a parachute training exercise at the General de Wet Training Area as a result of being dragged under canopy in high winds after landing. The casualties were:

  • 65361446BT Sergeant Dirk Johannes Human. He was 28.
  • 68276666BT Rifleman Alan Taylor Bate. He was 23.

26 Nov 1982: 76306315BG Private Jannie Louw from 61 Base Workshops was accidentally killed when he was crushed between a military vehicle and a guard tower at Centurion, Pretoria. He was 22.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1977 – 2 Lt Thomas Albion KIRTON and Rfn Simon Alexander SPINK (19), both of 6(Indep) Coy, RR, were killed in an accidental shooting during a mistaken contact between two friendly sticks.

1977 – Gd C. MASHAMBA, PV Prtn Group, GF, died on active service.

1977 – CA Lamech M. NEMUTAMBWE, ADF, Intaf, was murdered by CTs.

1978 – Aux Cst Patrick KWARAMBA, PR, BSAP, was killed in a CT action, at the age of 22.

1978 – Tpr Anthony John MILLAR, 2 Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, was killed in a contact in the Sinoia/Karoi area, Karoi Fire Force, Op Hurricane. Died 3 days before his final bush trip was to end. Anthony was about to attend university on a scholarship.

1979 – L/Cpl Jerifanosi CHAPUTIKA, 2nd Bn, RAR, died from gunshot wounds received in a CT action.

1979 – Spr Njabula NCUBE, 1 Sqn, RhE, died from shrapnel wounds in an accidental explosion.
