Today, 1 December, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

01 Dec 1978: 74313552BB Lance Corporal Lionel Ashley Roe from Air Force Base Waterkloof was killed in a military vehicle accident at Waterkloof. He was 20.

01 Dec 1980: Rifleman Johan Nothnagel from 1 Parachute Battalion was killed in a private motor vehicle accident while on weekend pass. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1974 – Insp Charles Edward Blair FREEBAIRN, Staff, BSAP, died on active service.

1977 – During the month of December, the following died on active service, the actual day not known: L/Cpl Christiaan Rudolf KOTZE, Army; Rfn Hendrik Petrus KRUGER, Army; Pte A. MABHENA, 2nd Bn, RAR; Pte Martin MARANGE, Reg Army; Pte Simba MATSENHURE, Army; Spr Denis MUKUNDWA, RhE; and Rct Louis MUNYANA, Army.

1977 – Pte Andrew ZIVURA, Reg Army, died in a training accident.

1977 – Gd John Wise MAGAWISE, PV Prtn Group, GF, was killed in a CT action.

1978 – During the month of December, the following died on active service, the actual day not known: Gd E. MATAMBURIGWA, PV Prtn Group, GF; Cpl J. MUSHAYA, Reg Army; Gd G. POSI, PV Prtn Group, GF; and Gd L. SUNGAYI, PV Prtn Group, GF.

1978 – T/Capt Peter John CASWELL, RhAEC, died on active service. Pete was travelling in a Land Rover on the outskirts of Ft Victoria on the Birchenough Bridge Road, but did not see a train coming from the left. In the collision, he was thrown from the vehicle and broke his neck.

1978 – Spr Charles PINDURA, RhE, was killed in a vehicle accident.

1978 – Gd T. CHAKUWEYA, PV Prtn Group, GF, was killed in a CT action.
