RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

– Sgt Emilio DZINGAI, Depot, RhASC, died on active service.

– Rfn Matthew John SCALLAN, NS, Army, died in a vehicle accident on the Salisbury to Bulawayo road. He was 18 years old.

– Cpl Keith Peter LOCKE, Spt Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, died from gunshot wounds in a contact, western Kandeya TTL, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane, aged 22 years. The previous night, a group of ZANLA CTs walked into an ambush of Spt Cdo troops under Cpl Keith Locke, but only one CT was wounded. At first light, and in drizzling rain, the patrol started a follow-up, moving through thick bush where it was suspected the CTs had gone to ground. A firefight quickly ensued and the K-Car commander ordered his troops on the ground to move forward. A lone CT in a well-concealed position, waited for the troops to get very close before opening fire. Keith was shot and killed instantly, and L/Cpl J. Fourie badly wounded. Fourie, however, his thoughts with the other casualty, lobbed grenades at the CT position before withdrawing, actions which would earn him the BCR. The CT was eventually flushed out and killed.

– DSAs Tasisiyo Dzingai Sampson DZINGWA (20) and Calisto Chamunakire MASHAVIRA (20), both of Kp Prtn, Intaf, died 6 km from Kanyemba Sipolilo, Op Hurricane, when the vehicle they were travelling in detonated a landmine.

– Sgt Richard Louis "Dick" BIEDERMAN, C Sqn, SAS, was killed in an accidental shooting in Mozambique, at the age of 26. SAS operators were on covert operations aimed at disrupting ZANLA and FRELIMO logistical lines when the accident, involving another SAS patrol, occurred. He was an American national.

– DSA Abraham MAPIYE, Kp Prtn, Intaf, was killed in an ambush.
