Today, 8 December, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

08 Dec 1977: Three members from the Citizen Force and Commando’s were Killed in Action during a contact with insurgents when their patrol walked into a PLAN ambush near Ruacana. The casualties were:

  • 66206756KT Sergeant Johannes Cornelius Badenhorst from Regiment North Natal. He was 28.
  • 70499553KT Lance Corporal Christiaan Rudolf Kotze from West Coast Commando. He was 23.
  • 68201748KT Rifleman Johannes Hendrik Petrus Kruger from the Bloemfontein Commando. He was 25.

08 Dec 1987: Two members of the Gordonia Commando were killed when they were run over by a civilian vehicle that failed to stop at a military roadblock near Upington. They were:

  • 70434790KT Rifleman Willem Petrus Burger. He was 23.
  • 65436966KV Rifleman Desmond Reginald van der Merwe. He was 38. 

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1969 – Tpr Teddy Ronald EAST, 1st Bn, RLI, tragically died in Salisbury Central Hospital from a gunshot wound, aged 18 years.

1977 – 2Lt Albany Charles "Charlie" BICKLE, 1st Bn, RAR, died in a vehicle accident on the Bulawayo-Vic Falls road, Op Tangent. He had popped in to see his father on their farm in Nyamandhlovu and was hurrying back to join the convoy.

1978 – DA Samuel Z. SIBANDA, Regular, Intaf, died on active service.

1978 – Sgt Johannes Steyl WILLEMSE, A1 Coy, 8th Bn, RR, was killed in a contact, aged 28 years.

1979 – DSA Good TSARARA, Kp Prtn, Intaf, was killed in a contact.
