Today, 9 December, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

09 Dec 1969: 4277 Trooper Teddy Renald East, a South African National serving in the 1st Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, died in the Salisbury Central Hospital from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained. He was 18.

09 Dec 1977: Two members from 1 SAI were Killed in Action when their patrol walked into a SWAPO/PLAN insurgent ambush near St. Mary’s on the Yati Strip. They were:

  • 73336885BG Corporal Abraham Izak Emmanuel Venter. He was 20.
  • 73344103BG Rifleman Edwin Chaplin Bishop. He was 20.

09 Dec 1982: 77153997HK Rifleman Simeon Shimbaranda from 202 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents. He was 24.

09 Dec 1983: 79389656BG Rifleman Allen Derick Wolton from 7 SAI was killed in an accidental mortar bomb explosion during operations in Southern Angola. He was 19.

09 Dec 1991: 81138018PE Sergeant Laurens Kruger from Group 21 was killed when his Military vehicle overturned between Watersend and Bray. He was 26.

09 Dec 1993: 91201111BG 2/Lieutenant Gideon van Zyl from 4 SAI was Killed in Action by automatic weapons fire in Katlehong Township on the East Rand during a military intervention in a fire-fight between Armed IFP and ANC Militia’s. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Cst Stephen MAKARA, CPU, BSAP, died when stabbed in the Nyenyere Hostel, Harare Township, Salisbury, aged 25. Stephen was participating in a CPU raid in the township when, whilst trying to arrest a suspect, he was stabbed through the heart. His murderer absconded but was later arrested.

1977 – Sgt Johannes Cornelius BADENHORST, Army, died on active service.

1977 – Capt William Henry "Billy" HERMAN, 4th Bn ('Q' Cars), RR, was killed in an ambush. He was initially hit by a bullet that came through a gap between the bullet-proofed vehicle door and frame. He managed to debus, but ran straight into massive rifle and machine-gun fire. Serving with B Troop Special Forces at the time of his death. Described by a member of D Coy 4RR, of which Billy was OC at the time, as a man's man, a true gentleman, an outstanding officer; he was my OC in 4RR before he moved to create "Q" cars.

1978 – FR Chance CHIGAMBA, PR, BSAP, was killed in a CT action in the Sipolilo area, Op Hurricane.

1979 – Gd T. CHIDARIKIRE, GFRD, GF, died on active service.

1979 – Rfn Grant Stewart MATTHEWS and Pte Phinias MPOFU, both of 1(Indep) Coy, RAR, died from wounds in a CT action in Fort Victoria, Op Repulse.

1979 – Pte Killian MUTAMBURI, Spt Coy, 2nd Bn, RAR, died on active service.
