Today, 11 December, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny. 

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR 

11 Dec 1975: 72372642BA Sapper Alfred Robert Willemse from 2 Field Engineer Regiment Died of Wounds in the Battle of Bridge 14 in December 1975 during Operation Savannah. He suffered severe brain damage after being critically wounded in the head when the Bridge building team was attacked by Cuban Infantry. He was casevaced from the battlefield to the Forward Army Surgical Hospital at Cela where he underwent emergency surgery and was kept there under observation until his condition stabilised. He was then airlifted from Cela on 11 December 1975 to AFB Rundu with five other wounded soldiers and from there, flown back to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while still en-route to Pretoria. He was 19.

11 Dec 1977: Two members of 11 Commando Regiment “A” Company, 1st Platoon, Section 3 Died of Wounds when their Buffel vehicle detonated a boosted Yugoslavian TMA-3 Cheese Mine on Oom Willie se Pad. The vehicle was flipped over in the explosion and the two members, who were not strapped in, were crushed under the vehicle. They were:

  • 74764077BA Corporal Mark Anthony Wilcox. He was 19
  • 74232281BG Rifleman Daniel Louis Buys. He was 19.

11 Dec 1978: 75475988BA Lance Corporal Vivian Charles Evert from 5 SAI was accidentally killed while doing a recovery of a broken down pantry Bedford near Glencoe. He was 19.

11 Dec 1982: 79694212CK Lance Corporal Johnny Alvern Booysen from the South African Cape Corps was accidentally drowned at Rundu during an off-duty excursion. While swimming in the Okavango River, he was swept away by the river flow. He was 21.

11 Dec 1982: 79409348BG Rifleman Paul Labuschagne from 8 SAI was killed at Eenhana when struck by a bullet from an accidental discharge of a fellow soldier’s rifle. He was 19.

11 Dec 1983: 76470889BG Signaler Gary Bresler from 2 Signals Regiment was killed instantly after being struck by lightning during a training exercise at Sabie. He was 23.

11 Dec 1983: 75231506PE Lieutenant Eugene Werner Nel from the Infantry School was killed in a private motor vehicle accident near Oudtshoorn. He was 24.

11 Dec 1984: 66323593PE Captain Carel Petrus van der Merwe Brand from Sector 30 was killed in a military vehicle accident on the Kamanjab to Erwee Road in South West Africa. He was 34.

11 Dec 1984: 83823542SCB Sapper D.A. van Wyk from 1 SWA Engineer Regiment, attached to 102 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in the Koakoveld. He was 18.

11 Dec 1990: 85543981BG Private Rudi van Rooyen from the Ordnance Service School was accidentally killed at Bloemhof while refueling a convoy en route to Cape Town when he was run over by a diesel bunker vehicle. He was 21

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1971 – Flt Sgt Solomon "Solly" JOUBERT, Drill and PT Instr, RhAF, died in a training accident after falling 400 feet whilst climbing the Chimanimani Mountains, Melsetter, on an Outward Bound course. Died aged 30.

1976 – L/Cpl Charlie MCLEOD, 5 Prtn Coy, RDR, was killed in Kambazuma Township, Salisbury.

1979 – Sgt Kenneth CHIMUNYEMBA, Uniform, BSAP, was killed in a CT action in the Umtali area, Op Thrasher, at the age of 30.

Wife of late solly joubert was wondering if there are or were any pictures off solly joubert and there group on the coarse that December 1971 u unfortunately never got any pictures back would love to have seen him in action still such a sad day of my life
