1978 – Sgt Ross Anthony EWING, RIC, was killed in action at Nkai.
“Ross Ewing was killed at Nkai when I was there. He went out with the 2.5 with a PO named Ant Knight and some police constables to rescue District Officer Iain Fyfe, my husband, and Trevor Smith (also Intaf), along with some DAs who were stuck in the bush with a Puma after heavy rains. They had settled down for the night with Bobby Joe, our dog, in the cab after stealing some blankets from a local store and were quite happy. The terrs had formed an ambush position on all roads leading to the Puma as they knew someone would be coming. Ross should not have gone in at night and secondly not with a 2.5. Ant was manning the mounted Browning and Ross was driving. As they came into the ambush zone Ant returned fire until the Browning jammed. Ross was shot and died instantly, falling on the steering wheel and drifting to the side. The police guys grabbed Ant and ran him out of the ambush area - he has them to thank for his life.” - Linda Kreidl
